Knocking and Vague Steering

Featured Replies

Evening folks

Just bought myself a Fabia VRS and I'm having a few little niggles I want to get nipped in the bud

When your driving along and its doesn't matter what kind of road surface of type of road, the steering seems a little vague. As thought it's got some play in it. And you can feel it where you move the wheel and it does feel like it has movement somewhere.

Can't immediately see anything untoward after having a look but along with that it also has a knock when you set off

Someone suggested shocker might be worn.

Now it has some GT ditch finders on it and I have 4 new Uniroyals to go on soon

I can't imagine the tyres would cause that much issue.

Any pointers to look for please?

Thanks

The tyres and the pressure certainly can cause serious issues.

The the Steering assist could have been reset with more assistance, so have that checked to see it is on Factory Setting,

or you can have it with less assistance.

For the know have the spring checked to see it is not broken.

Not easily spotted and the drivers side is a possibility.

There are also other issues with some track ends.

?

How old and how many miles, and do you know if on standard springs or lowered ones.?

Thanks for the reply.

Pressures are done or at least think there ok. Had to convert Bar to PSI as the local fuel station only had PSI setting.

A spring does sound a possibility as does a TRE.

2010 car with 52k on it. Standard springs at present.

Thanks

Just had a thought?

Do the mk2 Fabias suffer with the same front anti roll bar issue that mk1s had?

Might be that.

Mk2 vRS really need decent tyres fitted, and attention paid to the tyre pressures.

Anything wrong will be a fault, wear and tear etc.

No idea about Mk1's and their issues others might though, but front ARB issues are not something i am aware of.

You can fit stiffer ones, but first you need to find the fault you have.

I have had a spring broken at the bottom, and another top and bottom and these breaks were not visible until the spring was off.

Drivers side both times.

Check the tie rod end ball joints for play, steering rack for lateral movement, then the front suspension bushes, and finally the subframe for movement caused by loose or missing mounting stretchbolts which may have snapped if someones loosened them and tried to retighten them during an alignment exercise.

Then there are a fair number of early vRS that have had a new engine or 2 fitted in the past 5-6 years.....

Yeah that makes sense about the subframe.

I'll get it up onto a ramp at the weekend and have a good look and hope I come up with something.

So I have just looked under the car at the front to see if I could see anything untowards.

Yep!

The OSF shocker is leaking big time.

Oil all over the place.....well I assume so unless there not oil filled!

So looks like I know what I'll be buying very soon!
