Correct timing setup with VCDS pd130

Featured Replies

Evening, been doing a bit of searching for the correct procedure on setting the torsion value properly on a fabia vrs but only seem to find discussions, was wondering if there's a solid guide or something along the lines on the best way to read the values, Ie hot, cold, rev range etc, I've got vcds lite and a cheap cable which does the readings etc so I'll want to set the timing spot on, even after using the correct VW timing tools as I have an idle judder, timing belts due now so have my suspicion it may be out, belt was done when I bought it, going to be fitting this weekend, I've never came across adjusting the torsion value on the 1.9,many thanks

Thanks had a look through there, one thing I don't get and someone will probably be able to confirm is, you loosen the three thirteens when you set it to tdc and remove the tools then adjust the torsion, would you keep the crank locked?

Timing belt is changed using the normal procedure (locking the pulleys etc), once its done drive the car and get it to operating temperature and then adjust the timing to get the torsion value within spec.

You only need to take off the top cover, loosen the 3 x 13mm bolts and then using an 18mm spanner just tap the spanner to move the camshaft a fraction, tighten the 13mm bolts and recheck the torsion value, you can tell from the reading if you are moving the cam in the right direction i.e. it gets further away or closer to zero.

if it's done right it shouldn't need tweeking     the 3 bolts should only be tightened AFTER the belt has been tensioned (little counter intuitive) having kept crank and cam locked  my understanding of the Kerma piece is for tired belts   N.B. timing can be lumpy even when done properly if still cold, but be OK when hot  N.N.B hot coolant is not hot oil or a hot engine   :-)

Thanks fellas, yeah that clears it up a bit wasn't sure if the crank had to be locked, obviously the cam can't as the pin would stop the shaft moving altogether, strangely enough I'm fine at idle it's just when it's hot it's really bad and most forums come up with timing issues, needs a belt now anyway so if I can fix the idle judder I'll be happier, car still has other issues
