Head Unit Options

Featured Replies

Car had an older Columbus retrofitted before I owned it. Maps are quite out of date on it and it's a little slow so I'm thinking of upgrading. Still needs to be Skoda OEM but what are my options? Doesn't have to be DAB as I'm presuming that need another aerial?

Columbus is still the top of the range for OEM. You can go for a newer unit with SSD drive, or even a DAB unit, but as you say a new antenna is needed.

Are the newer units faster? I don't use the HDD so it's a waste. The other issues is with SD cards. Sometimes it reads fine for weeks, then it decides to error and won't recognise the card for a bit.

Yes, a bit faster. Depends how old your unit is as to how much faster but it's an improvement over the early stuff. Why not use the hard drive? There's 20Gb there to store music on.

Pretty sure mine isn't 20gb, more like 14gb? I use 32gb flash drives. My main one is almost full of music and music podcasts which I rotate weekly. Stuff I'll always listen to can go on the hard drive

Also how do I update maps? Mine are out of date but the sat nav always insists on taking me down farm tracks to save a tenth of a second or a few meters less of distance. It's really annoying. Is it a case of buying them off Skoda?

If you only have 14Gb of hard drive space then you must have one of the first edition ones with a small hard drive. They came with a 30Gb drive, and about half will be taken up as a maps partition. Later ones have a 40Gb drive which gives about 20Gb for music, and later still have a 32Gb SSD drive with again about 20Gb for music.

Maps are a dealer software disc for about £180.

Edit: I have a couple of different units for sale at the moment. Check the link in my sig.

With DAB radios do I need anything extra?

A DAB antenna, that's all.
