System Restore not working - Win XP

Featured Replies

As the title suggests really.

Error message reads - system restore cannot restore your system to an earlier time

Any pointers short of reinstalling windows?

Can I ask why you want to restore ??

It's always a good idea to create a restore point before you do any system maintenance.

There is a lot to be said for a complete format and re-install - amazing how much carp build up in the system -- but a lot depends what you have on the PC and if you need to save anything

chuck us some details about what you're trying to do and i'll see what i can do. you may just have no system restore points. i don't trust SR meself, anyway...

...that with no info...

Inadvertantly deleted Java run time environment and Limewire the other day.

Since that I have tried to re-install from www.java.com with both online & offline install. Each time they hang ending up in shut down and restart. I have also tried re-installing Limewire both on & off line and the system hangs.

End program does not respond either.

I thought I would try a system restore to a point before deleting Java to see if this would help.

I can confirm the PC has registered IN BOLD on it's little calendar jobby that it has created restore points however none of the six random previous ones I have tried have been successful.

The fact that I can not system restore is a little worrying

Not sure how much help I can be, but here is:

Is your only problem with Restore that it won't restore Java? I.e. Have you tried setting a restore point, doing nothing more than moving a few desktop items around and running a restore to see what happens?

FWIW I have problems with Java (screen hang etc) and was only successful when I switched every control (and I have several) either "off" or down to the lowest level.

If you have messed about with the registry, that might have an impact.

Have you downloaded the latest updates and fixes from Microsoft (Windows Update)? These can sometimes repair damage during the process.

When running system restore it does not complete and gives an error message so I'm not sure whether it is restoring java?

Controls?

Not that I know of

Yup, no joy :o

If I was to re-install windows how would I go about re-installing the NIS2006 as I downloaded and payed for it on-line? i.e no disk to re-install from??

The rest of the stuff on my PC is either free (zone alarm, forefox etc) or I have original disks etc?

Thanks for your help

if you do that and you have uninstalled the programs what I found is yes you will see the icons again but the program information is not restored so you cannot run the program.

I have the same problem with this laptop. It hangs when rebooting after going through the System restore procedure. When I reset it the computer goes back into windows and says the restore failed. It then gives the option to undo the changes that took place during the Restore attempt. This is regardless of how far back I try to restore and whichever type of points I select. The machine is 9 months old and came with XP Pro SP2 Pre-installed.

doesn't really solve your problem, but if you turn SR off on that drive then back on, it will clear all your previous system restore points. if it's not working because they're corrupt, this might help...
