How is this even worked out?

Featured Replies

So i insure my 2013 Fabia SE HTP 70 for £450 atm with Axa, they're really great and sensible things arent described as mods, but a RARB or anything they arent interested in.

I want a RARB (thats it really, i don't want to lose any comfort but i want it to drive abit better in the corners) but apparently that makes my premium nearly double at £800.. even though it makes it a better handling car and therefore probably just a safer car?

So who are the sponsors on here that would like to give me a quote this September? Not yet, as im slightly over a month from renewal, but when i get under a month, who can i try?

Adrian Flux is on the list... but who else is good for mods? or just one performance mod really.

Did they fully understand the 'RARB' , ie a ' Rear Anti Sway Bar' / or  'Rear Anti Roll Bar'.

They did not think it was a Roll Bar / Roll Cage did they?

It took some explaining to a nice lady on the phone mate. I did have to spell out 'roll' instead of 'row' and many other things she interpreted it as. They're a little like that though.. i rang up to ask about HID's last year and a different lady hadnt heard of that either. I explained what they were and she said theres no need to declare that though.

It seems to me, they're realistic about what they do accept (i.e, not fussy about the silly things, which is great) but then they don't actually accept any true modifications at all.

So for a RARB just to make the car drive abit better it would cost me £240 fitted for a H&R RARB by AwesomeGTI (i haven't shopped around on that yet) but then an extra £350 on insurance (these are quotes on next years policy and the added cost is increase on premium on next years policy).

So all in all, £540 to add a RARB.

Seems crazy to me? and it isnt happening at that price!

Problem is AXA won't want to insure a modified car.

Generally with modifications you're far better off with a specialist.

Even though it usually ends up being underwritten by the same company anyway.....Found this out with my old Disco, which was definitely not standard. None of the mainstream insurers would touch it, and when I found a specialist company to cover it, the policy was provided by LV - who refused to quote, go figure???

Makes no sense!

Maybe just to keep it simple for the broker?

The lady at AXA couldnt understand what a rarb was at first. Said she'd check with the underwritter and then came straight back 2 seconds later n said no chance :D.

My slightly modded ibiza is cheaper to insure with HIC than it was anywhere as a standard car.

Please give us a call or PM me your name and number and I'll get someone to call you for details. Did we meet at the National last month?

Okay mate, will do (:

No we didnt meet. I know this because i wasnt there :D.

It's not as clear cut as making it handle better though, certainly on the MK1 I spoke to a few people who found with a RARB the car would snap more easily when on the limit.

That said, it does sound like they think it's a roll cage, but tbh as softie said, you're better off with a specialist insurer anyway with mods. It's sometimes handy, our old Fiesta ST was CHEAPER to insure with a specialist when I put lowering springs on it (after a standard one snapped) than it was as standard :D

AXA probably have restrictions on certain non factory modifications. Many insurers do.

One of my first ever cars was on a policy with Highway. Was all fine until I changed car, and had to change insurers because of non standard wheels and it was over a certain value.
