Interrupted DPF regens and drop in mpg

My apologies if this is yet another post of mine regards a dpf question but just looking for reassurance, if anything.

Basically, the last 2 weeks I've been doing approx 10 mile journeys to and from a particular place and twice now when arriving, the fans have been going mad and the car idles at 1K.

Due to the fact I'm always pushed for time, I can't let the engine run for too long and me reckons I've stopped the car from attempting to regen on 2 occassions.

Is this bad? Normally, the car gets some long motorway journeys but this is just a temporary phase where my destination is only short so I'm wondering if the car isn't getting up to temperature.

Also, my mpg has dropped a bit and my driving hasn't exactly changed. Would you suggest when I get the earliest opportunity give it a blast on the motorway or am I worrying for worryings sake?

I have to go out tomorrow and don't want to pull up only to find it's tried doing it a 3rd time.

This is normal if you are doing a lot of short journeys as is the drop in MPG.

Mine used to regen even after long runs apparently this is normal. As your doing shorter journeys you notice the regens where as it's not noticeable on the motorway. As for interruption of them, it will attempt it so many times until soot levels get too high to burn off itself, you'll get the dpf light on then it'll need plugged into vag com to carry out the regen.

Wrong. When you get the DPF light on then it's time to go to the motorway to drive for a longer time to perform the regeneration. No software needed so far.

Only when you get additional lights on (check engine and glowplugs) then it's time to do a forced regeneration.

 

 

About topic - keep driving. Maybe it will be fine till the next long run. If not - you will see the DPF light (look above). Then I suggest you not to play with it otherwise quite soon you might expect limp mode and additional lights - that will be a bigger problem for you. About reduced MPG - well, each regeneration consumes some fuel (no matter if succesful or not). When i drive outside the town I might expect to see computer showing 4/100km (59mpg) but when it rises to 5l/100km (47mpg) I know that it's regeneration going on.

Apologies you're right regarding the first dpf light a slip of the mind. Twice my light came on after a few short trips and a 10 mile run cleared it on both occasions.

Try to avoid any short trips before your DPF is clean. Once I had such unpleasant experience. Light appeared but I thought that I'll clean it after 2 days when I'll have some longer journey. During these days my wife had a few trips here and there and I wasn't able to go fishing (and clean DPF simultaneously) just because it was way too full.

Ok thanks for clarifying. Erm, not sure how achievable that is as I need to make at least a few more journeys to said place.

It is worth mentioning that the car was ex lease and looking at it's service history, did lots of motorway mileage on a vairiable plan. What I mean is, since my ownership (18 months now) this has only just occured so I'm hoping it's just the change in nature of driving and not something more sinister.

It needs a really good run so will try do this at weekend. I've heard some pretty grim stories about limp mode and people being told their dpf has suffered too much soot loading and even forced regens won't correct them.

I'll have to think a little more carefully perhaps when planning journeys.

If you are doing lots of short trips and low mileage per year you might need to consider changing to a petrol. Diesels really don't like short journeys they never fully warm up. I loved my pd vrs i just wasn't doing the miles and i did start having regen issues. It was gut wrenching selling that car but don't regret switching to a tfsi.

I understand that you don't have that DPF warning right now, do you? Then don't bother driving the way you wish. Who knows, maybe you will be lucky.

Don't do that only when the light is on.

Are these 10 mile commutes through town? My commute is only about 12 miles and it manages to regenerate fine. In winter when the engine takes longer to warm up I sometimes interrupt it when I get to work but it does the majority of the regen to the point where it never tries again on the way home

 

The mpg will drop if its trying to regen all the time due to wasting diesel in the DPF to get the temps up

Sorry if my last post was confusing or mis read. I don't have the dpf warning light on and as explained, these journeys are temporary from what is usually, long motorway miles with occassional A/B road spirited runs.

It didn't attempt to regen this evening so hopefully yes, lucky I will be.
