Recent problems with One Note - Windows 8.1 only ?

Featured Replies

Typical Toy operating system  problems !

Whilst attempting to update a record in One Note this morning, I appeared to lose the complete contents of the Notebook in which the folder I was printing to was contained. This Notebook has been established for years on this machine and comprises many fully populated folders.

The document I was attempting did get saved to an "Unfiled" section, rather than the folder I had selected.

Despite closing and re-starting One Note and Windows 8.1, several times the Notebook will not connect or sync to restore itself, although the "Unfiled note" is preserved and available to view.

Initially, I suspected that the Onedrive server had crashed, but the web-based "Server down" reporting sites say its been OK today. Would  the server going down take out the complete notebook file on my desktop ?

I've checked my on-line Microsoft account and the One Note notebook appears and can be accessed on there (Fully intact) and the same for my Windows 10 machines.

The connection/syncing address in the copy of One Note on Windows 8.1 seems fine, but it just won't sync.

Per advice on the web, I've tried to remedy the connection and syncing problem  by remaking the Credential files and by downloading Windows essentials, but to no effect.   I also copied the connection address across from the on-line version of One Note (Which works) and inserted it in the desktop copy of One Note. Again it won't connect.

Any ideas ?

I've noticed that one of the copies of One Note on the main Windows 10 machine seems to be in the process of completely re-populating its records (Folders are OK) as if the One Note had just been newly installed - but that's not the case, Office was installed on this machine years ago and the file structure should be fully populated.

???

Cheers

One Note urinated on their customers a few months back, by limiting "Free" accounts to only TWO devices; have you fallen victim to this??

Haven't had any formal notifications from MS on this count and, I have got ON running on 4 machines, viz tablet (W10), laptop (W10) and 2 x desktops  (One W8.1 and the other W10+7).

Oddly, The W10 desktop, which was an upgrade from W8.1, lost its local copy of the ON database, but was able to sync, whereas, the W8.1, which also lost its local copy was only able to sync again after an overnight.

Just used the W10 laptop and ON is fine on that, except it did make me make me sign-on again i.e. once at machine start-up and again at ON start-up. It doesn't usually do that, usually sign-on at machine start-up is sufficient. Also, ON on the laptop, came up with a lead page with details of several other new applications e.g. Sway that can now interface with ON and all the ON on-line connections now seem to originate from the  Onedrive web site.

MS updated the ON application and changed the server address all in one ? - without giving anybody the heads-up ?  With 4 x active/semi-active machines, I should have got at least one  notification ?

But nahda - that MS for you, big blonde smiley females happily tinkling the keys with carefree abandon on the happy-clappy web-pages and below ground, the business of user unfriendly IT processes on unabated.

How can you have confidence in a product which can be randomly whipped away from your use at any time at the whim of the so-called "Service provider". I'm lucky, in that I have niff, naff and trivia on mine, most of which are duplicates from other sites, but there are horror stories out there of students, in the states, i.e. a substantial part of the new target audience, loosing a whole terms notes through non-restoration of a ON database.

Not on is it. Who's going to treat ON as grown-up software ?

There was a shyte storm thrown at them for it, maybe they reversed the move, or upped the limit; I know originally there was no limit on the number of devs you could have sharing an account.

I tried it a few years back, but it is only any good if you have a good, nearly always on internet connection, and mobile internet around Malvern was until recently DIRE, so it was limited to home, parents house and work; whereas the time I needed it the most was out and about delivering/collecting children.

Sods Law btw, nearly EVERY Primary school reception area in Malvern seems to have been built in a dead zone for mobile internet.

This is the power of government.

They CAN ensure that every kid gets the opportunity to achieve clinical obesity, tooth rot, diabetes and gangrene (As well as contributing to the NHS overspend). . and disabling student debt

but CAN'T ensure that that a usuable broadband service is delivered to the average railway cuttings/Persimmon villas.

Both require acts of omission, neglect and apathy (To "Succeed") . . .Ah !  the secret of government.

With all-in-it-together friends like that who needs . . . .

Who said you could put Highland Gorillas in charge of Redmond and HMG and produce better welfare outcomes for the whole population in the long-term - perhaps that's the next TRUMP suggestion.
