Octy Greenline III

Featured Replies

I've recently taken delivery of a new-to-me 64 plate Greenline III with 44k on the clock. Even though our other car is a Superb mkII FL L&K I'm really pleased with it so far, especially when the trip computer is claiming 65mpg on a run.

How do others rate the Michelin Energy Saver tyres? They don't feel particularly grippy and I've managed to provoke a couple of squeals out of them when cornering not particularly hard.

My other car, not a Skoda but a Citroen C1, came with Michelin Energy Saver tyres and I was amazed how little grip they have - they save energy because of the hardness of the compound which necessarily leads to lower grip. Even though the C1 is a low power city car I could easily spin a wheel almost at will and I felt very uneasy in damp, let alone wet, weather.

So I fairly quickly changed to tyres with a more traditional construction, albeit with a price to pay increased mpg, and have been much happy with the increased grind feel.

I guess it all depends on your priorities...

Well, the ability to stay on the road is quite useful! We've recently moved to Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance all round on the Superb and are happy with the level of grip so that'll most likely be what I change for (once my bank account settles down).

I have a 64 plate Octy GL3 which I've had from new. It's a great car and I'd probably keep it till it dies were it not for a growing family. Good purchasing!

Regarding the tyres, I've not had many issues but I think I just learned to drive it in a way that reduces the likelihood of slipping. I often drive around in sport mode too and actually find that helps because I'm less likely to over rev it. There's one particular junction where it's happened a few times but that's normally when it's busy and I need to get going quickly. Most of the time it stays under control.

I should add that most of the time there are two adults and two small humanoids in the car (myself included) and I do find it a bit less grippy if I'm on my own.

As an aside, how does the new Octy compare up against the Mk2 Superb? Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am interested in your perceptions of the Octy.

An interesting question but tricky to answer given the difference in specs:

'64 Octavia GL III (1.6 CR110) in effectively SE trim vs

'14 Superb II FL (2.0 CR170 DSG) L&K

This is our second Superb (previous one was a '04 Superb I (1.9PD) Elegance (top of the range back then)

I note that it's possible to get most but not all of the L&K goodness in the Octavia III too. I'm expecting to miss creature comforts like: heated windscreen; auto-dimming rear and side mirrors; heated front & rear seats; auto lights and wipers. We were surprised as to how *quiet* the Octavia was too from both road and engine noise. However I think the Superb wins on ride *comfort*, it does feel generally more refined but I understand that the L&K ride is worsened by the 18" wheels which it gets as standard.

Also the Superb cabin feels "a little more special", it's a bit less blingy and understated than the Octavia and having silly things like cabin ambient lighting and full leather is quite nice. Of course the Superb has class-leading rear legroom as well - but this does come at the price of being sometimes harder to find a parking space. One thing which lets down the Superb II is the aged Columbus infotainment system, it's definitely slow and clunky and the Octavia III wins hands down (though I don't have satnav on the GL).

At the end of the day, I settled on the Octavia because it fitted the budget that I had (a newish Superb was outside my budget). It looks like the equivalent trim is only about £2000 more in the Superb (new price) and for that you get a noticeably larger and more refined car with more toys as standard. I can see that we will eventually replace our current Superb with another.

Thanks for that.

I was interested in your view on the lack of road noise with the Octy.

Like you, replacing the Superb is only likely to be with another.

Indeed, SWMBO also commented on the lack of road noise. My next set of tyres will most likely be the Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance (happy with these on the Superb too) which should a little quieter still.
