Trailer module coding

Featured Replies

Bit of help please - I have a 2007 Roomster Scout with detachable Prof Svar towbar, 13 pin electrics, and parking sensors fitted at the factory.

When a trailer is connected all lights work perfectly BUT I don't get any other indication a trailer is fitted.

Parking sensors emit a long sound (faulty), and nothing appears on the screen of my Amundsen unit.

Can someone tell me what SHOULD happen so I can start to track down the fault?

Were the towbar electrics factory fitted or just the parking sensors?, couldn't quite tell from the wording.

Could be that the parking sensors are not deactivating when the trailer socket is connected. This could cause the long beep synonymous with something being too close to the rear number.

However, the lack of any display might counter this suggestion (assuming that a reversing display was present at some point).

Sounds like it just needs coding to me, the procedure is the same for all makes of tow bar as essentially the modules all work the same if its a full integrated system.

I would put a link to the coding but I presume you don't have VCDS so its pointless really but the coding is the easiest thing to check before fault finding the installation so I would check that out first.

Thanks all.

I have factory fitted 13 pin electrics and factory rear sensors. The parking sensors have now given up the ghost even without a trailer fitted.

I was expecting to have SOME indication that the trailer is syncing with the car - however the lights all work fine, so perhaps I should stop moaning?

VCDS? I stupidly bought the canbus only version a few years ago when we had Golf 5 platform cars which is useless with a 1.6 canbus Roomster - I have a Hong Kong Phooey cable but it wont access the trailer module.

If you are anywhere near Fort William, I'll take a look with VCDS for you.

Ha ha! I've been in Cornwall by Lands End for the last week ! Probably cheaper to buy myself  a cable than pay for the fuel?  :)

I'll be back in Herefordshire for two weeks (wish) in the middle of October if that is any help...

The trailer control module does need to be programmed with an action code which links it to the gateway doing this will not only tell the trailer module is fitted but it will also code the park assist to not come on while the trailer is connected.

I have the Skoda/VW/Westfalia electrics on my Octavia and nothing appears on the dashboard when the trailer electrics are attached, until a bulb blows and then the bulb warning light appears.  As mentioned above what should happen is when a trailer is attached it should disable the reversing sensors as well as the rear fog light if the vehicle was coded to tell it has a trailer ECU.  Another handy feature to note is that if the trailer is unpluged when the car is locked it sets off the car alarm.

All correct. There is some debate as to whether the rear fog light and reversing light on the car are also disabled.

The rear fog is a feature that can be changed with VCDS. The fog light I cannot find.

CAN Gateway, Engine, ABS, park assist (parking sensors) all need looking at if coding properly.

I haven't tested mine much since fitting it but I did notice that the start/stop didn't work when I was towing my trailer so it may disable that as well but I can't confirm 100% as it could of been disabled for another reason.

On my Yeti the reverse light still works, but not the rear fog.

Car was reprogrammed by the dealer after the "fitter" cocked it up big style. Dealer took a GREAT deal of care to get it right!!

I can't get access to the trailer module on my 2007 Roomster Scout to change anything.

From what I have seen the whole car is coded wrong - but it goes and stops, so hey-ho.

If you want to head over to Bromyard (Herefordshire) next week, I'll take a look for you.

If it's not a dedicated module you won't be able to access and code it with VCDS anyway.

Thanks. Although there was an error in my post!

The fog light I have found, the reversing light I cannot. But from what you have said, the reversing light should still be active; but other people have disagreed.

Thanks for the offer, I'm not that far from you. Unfortunately I will have to take a rain-cheque on that due to commitments next week.

(It's a dedicated VAG trailer module, factory fitted. My Hong Kong Phooey 15.7 vcds cable says 'too many communication errors to continue')

No problem. Unfortunately I'm off back to Scotland at the weekend and won't be back until the new year.
