ENGINE BRAKING

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Been pondering this one for a while. Can anyone explain to me why, when I lift off the accelerator, my Citigo doesn't noticeably slow down?

Is it because it is a low volume 3 pot or does it open the exhaust valves to reduce compression???

I notice though that I do have engine braking if I change down??

It's a light car with low engine friction.

Of course, you can get the same effect with a heavy car (I often have to brake after lifting off with the car in front when I start catching it!)

Yup, my diesel Fabia has noticeable engine braking, but the 2016 diesel Qashqai I drove last week had virtually none.

The throttle is drive by wire and probably does not snap shut in the same way that a mechanical butterfly with a stiff return spring would.

Internal friction is lower in 3 pot engine. One of those features which I like.

Two main reasons:

- Very low internal friction, all modern cars are like this, it improves fuel economy.

- Fly-by-wire throttles don't tend to snap shut, but ease off at a predetermined rate, this is supposedly to do with minimising NOx emissions.

I find the engine loses revs incredibly slowly compared to other cars, meaning gear changing takes a bit longer when you want to rev-match!

Or, there is heavier flywheel? To make it run smoother.

I'm pretty sure it cuts fuel as soon you release throttle. So it doesn't matter if butterfly is shut at the same time. And when you give it throttle again it comes smoothly. Wouldn't if butterfly was open.
