Considering leasing deals question about mileage.

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I'm considering leasing my next car and seen some cracking deals. I do approx 20k a year and it appears that it's often cheaper to pay the excess mileage than start the lease at the 20k miles however if you started the lease based on say 5k miles a year surely the lease company would not be to happy when you return it with 40k on the clock. I know you would pay the extra mileage but would there be any other charges?

Nope you just pay excess mileage charges. Worth checking with the individual leasing company that they don't have any tiered charges or maximum mileage allowance.

Otherwise, only other consideration is to keep the vehicle within the BRVLA fair wear & tear guidelines (or potential charges), and service requirements :)

Make sure you ask for a quote for 20K and one for 5K to compare.

Assuming you are looking at a VAG lease then the vast majority of their range sits at 7.2 pence per mile inc. VAT making every extra 1,000 miles cost £72.

15,000 extra miles would be £1,080 a year or £2,160 over a two year lease.

See how much difference the monthlies are between the 5K and 20K quotes, if it's more than £2,160 then it makes sense to go low and pay the excess at the end.

You should also be aware that there are several people over on Piston Heads that have rung up VW Finance half way through their lease and told them they are over their mileage allowance, VWF have then offered a reduced pence per mile offer, sometimes as little as £0.03p/mile.
