Issues to be sorted prior to purchase

Featured Replies

About to go ahead with the purchase of an ex demo L&K ( TV tuner build).  Any comments about these faults (dealer pointed out most of them). I hope I'm correct in making this one thread.

Windscreen. A big stone impact. New screen on order. My concern is that a windscreen replacement company will be used. I've heard horror stories of the removal of the "glued in" screens being done incorrectly/incompetently and paint scratched down to bare metal and no primer/paint repair work done. Water then tracks along the scratches and causes major corrosion that is only discovered down the line when a water leak occurs - if you are lucky it also tracks out under visible paint work before major damage.  Will a major Skoda dealer have procedures in place to ensure work is done to a Skoda specification?  Any issues with windscreen mounted sensors/camera(s)?

"Chrome" trim: The valeting company that prepare new vehicles have lost their contract after having used  the wrong chemical/strength/procedures and created black "water stains" on the radiator grill and several other areas.  These are being replaced. I have no concerns.

Wheel: One 19" alloy (Phoenix?)  badly kerbed - rim + 2 spokes around 6 cm from rim.  Should have taken photo.  My interest in alloy wheels extends little beyond size and ease of cleaning and I own a BMW!!.  Are these "diamond cut" and repairable? I know Mercedes wheel insurance replaces "diamond cut" wheels.  If correct repairs are done by a few specialists should I push for a new replacement - guess a replacement wheel would cost the dealer £200 or less.

Headlight: Not known by dealer.  The internal lens looks to have what can be best described as greasy thumb print between 9 and 12 o'clock. Only visible when illuminated.  I presume the headlight is a sealed unit and I should expect a "warranty" replacement and no attempted repair

Did the "TV Tuner"  build have "Smart light assist" as standard? Sales staff thought it did - Bit concerned since I would have thought VIN + "Skoda" computer = full specification.  Looking at coding threads indicates the hardware is present so coding (and other options) - sorry another thread?

How long are you planning to keep it?

If within warranty any recurrent problems will be covered.

Maybe also get the windscreen change documented in case there are issues.

Maybe walk away and find a better one?

You realise you can get 20% off retail price, so ex demos arent always a bargain.

Ex-demo can be a lottery. Tend to have.a hard life from the start that can lead to major issues. I only ever once bought an ex-demo and it was a nightmare, so never again. By the way you describe it I would walk away too.

Th MY16 L&K did not have Smart Light Assist as standard and it can't be coded AFAIK.

They need to be cheap, low miles and good condition.

My dad had some good ex demos and some bad, one had been badly kerbed and needed wheel bearing, driveshaft replaced and wheel/tyre.

I know salesmen who used to race them from cold etc also. Glowing brake discs also after high speed runs.
