Squeak !

Featured Replies

At first turn of the key and at low speeds there is a very audible squeaking noise. Not 100% convinced it's suspension as goes away at higher speeds and is there at the turn of the key. Seems to eminate from front R/H area ?

Does it sound like a squeaking alternator belt? If it is it could be the alternator pulley freewheel failing.

Is that bad/expensive to sort ?

Is yours a vRS?

Mines a TDI but a few people have said some vRS's had them on too. Check with your local dealer or TPS. Mine ended up being a new alternator and pulley as it sheared off, ended costing me about £150 with all the bits. They were genuine though with 2 year warranty luckily my nephew works for VW so got them fitted for free.

A petrol engine shouldn't have a freewheel alternator pulley, there is no need.

Another thread Suggests the ARB bush/sleeve. Can I access the ARB without jacking to give them a lube ?

Try wiggling the radiator to see if it makes the same sound.

Best place to start is to take the alternator belt off and see if the noise disappears. If it does then check the pulleys with your hand, then would be putting a new belt on to see what happens.

VAG cars do love an alternator squeal, which can be sorted by changing the pulley, although I'm not sure if VRS' have the same set up.

Looks like Tech1e has nailed it, radiator is rediculously loose at the bottom to the point it pivots about the top mounting , wiggling it back and forward produces a squeak , will affix it and report back !

Easiest way to fix it is drill a small hole in the bottom of the frame from underneath (remove undertray if it's still fitted) and cable tie.

Good news ! Had drivers front wheel off for a butchers and there's a cooler that runs just inside the wheel arch area and the rubber bush for that is shot , wiggle it and "squeak" , made a packer and took her for a drive - silence ! - result.
