VRS TFSi engine rattle

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just had my '06 VRS serviced and asked the garage to check out an annoying engine rattle which sometimes appears whilst they had it. It's at idle mostly but can also be heard during regular driving some times. It does not seem to be linked to the revs of the engine as it maintains a constant rattle/speed no matt the load on the engine. It feels/sounds like it's emanating from nearer to the bottom of the engine on the driver side if that helps.

There is no loss of performance and no loss of oil, either leaking or excessive burning (in fact the engine is doing really well for oil na d has been surprising in that department).

I knew the garage were busy as the service was slotted in last minute, so they have asked to have the car back when I have time as they are not 100% sure what it is with only a cursory few minutes to check but said it could be the cam chain, another prognosis is that it is the vacuum pump for the brakes.

I know it's a tricky one as you need to hear this to diagnose but can anyone shed light on rough costs for a the cam chain to be replaced and also the same for the vacuum pump so I'm prepared if it turns out to be either of those two.

Cheers

Nobody replaced brake vacuum pump or cam chain then?

Have you checked the timing chain tensioner? (Or more precisely have you ever replaced it, as if not it probably needs a modified part fitting)

If not be very careful as these just go and when they do it can be bye bye engine.

The constant with speed would suggest maybe not, but I'm not an expert on the TFSI so wouldn't want to be certain on the symptoms.

Re. cam chain there's a sticky thread at top of this section about chain tensioner failures which may give some info. on price. I'm sure I've seen threads which have prices in region of £400 - £500. But don't quote me on that!

An 06 TFSI VRS will be a belt not a chain so shouldn't experience the unexpected let go the TSI suffers from

Per previous post - engine will be ea113 series engine with belt. Will still have a tensioner mechanism of some description I would certainly think but not known for failures like the ea888 2.0tsi.  You are supposed to replace at set mileage / time limits though.

Quite a good summary of some of the differences between ea888 v ea113 engines here. This is an ecs US publication so the hp / engine code designations won't match entirely but it demonstrates key design differences.
