Car just turning over but not firing

Featured Replies

Took my car to petrol station lastnight to jet wash it. Turned car off in the bay scrubbed it. It fired up first time drove home easily parked outside got up this morning and it's just turning over but not firing then it beeps and oil light comes on. I here the diesel pump when I turn key and I've checked oil any ideas?

Horrible feeling that your immobiliser is working correctly. Do you have a second key you can try?

Power washes in the engine bay cause havoc - I once had mine valeted with strict instructions, NO jet wash in the engine bay, needless to say they Jet Washed the engine bay!

I had to disconnect the plugs from the ECU and the 2 front plug/sockets attached to the front of the engine, blast them out with an airline, wiped them over with WD40 and reconnect, thankfully all sorted.

Only got the one key. It does seem like the immobilisers stopping it. Will try unplugging and cleaning now

Crank sensor

What would be the best way of checking to see if it's the crank sensor? I've just read a few story's about crank sensor symptoms and sounds identical

Have a look to see if the rev counter moves while you crank the engine over.

Fuel valve on EGR ? Remove cover on engine top. Trace from driver side wiper to air intake pipe and valve is on windscreen side of air intake, on the side of the metal EGR valve Flick it to see if it's stuck and try to start.

If it was an immobiliser issue it would start then cut out.

Not the immobiliser then. I've just woke up so will try all the suggestions in a bit and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the help btw

It's the crank sensor what a ba€#%^* of a job to do as well right behind the oil cooler ????

The crank sensor is down near the flywheel end of the engine block. Usually easier to access from underneath the car.

May only need to disconnect the plug and blow some water out?

Disconnected plug first before I bought a replacement. Is the sensor end just pushed in or is there a nut or bolt holding it?

Never mind it's a bolt that's rotted so bad it looked like a receiver stud. I've gotta take the oil filter housing off the block now to get my grips to it. It's a good thing I love this car

Do you know for sure its the crank sensor before you go ahead and change it. Have you scanned the car for fault codes?

  • Author

Yeah scanned it no engine speed reading

AH, good luck with it then.

It is a bit of a pain, last time I changed one I took one of the coolant hoses off the oil cooler for better access

I'd be surprised if it was a crank sensor that suddenly gave up post steam clean.

But I've been surprised before.

Finally got sensor out. middle came but the plastic on the outside is stuck in the block. Gotta wait for FWB to open on Monday to get a bolt to wind in to get the plastic out and get a bolt for the top of the sensor

The cars been standing for two years. I've rescued it. The boot well was full of water. The interior was black with mold. took me 9 hours and a full bottle of bold 2 in 1 and a wet and dry vac to get the seats back to white.

I'd be surprised if it was a crank sensor that suddenly gave up post steam clean.

Did I miss something? Nowhere can I see that he has jet washed the engine bay or steam cleaned it.

I can see the confusion here. I've worded it a bit thick. I jet washed the outside not the engine bay. The car was parked in a bay sorry
