4x4 or two wheel drive?

Featured Replies

Given the choice - 1.9TD motor and otherwise identical car, what are the disadvantages (if any) of selecting a 4wd option?

I'm thinking driveshaft wear, servicing, general running costs etc

Just askin................   :coffee:  :coffee:

Slower...and all the above

They never did a 4x4 diesel in mk1?

Not in the UK, but they did in Europe.

I'd have one in a flash to be honest, yes you have all teh disadv, but a decent 4x4 system to keep you going when it gets tough

Yes - thought I'd seen a few...........just thinking as I may have to replace my car (blown head gasket apparently) and there's a 4wd for sale nearby albeit an Octavia2 I think..........

I guess its just a case of more moving parts therefore more to attend to.

I had mkII octavia 4x4, before thatI had a fwd mkI. I lost about 10% on the fuel consumption and there was the extra cost of the haldex oil change, but apart from that no real difference. I would say it handles a bit better with the fancier rear suspension setup.

plus you have much better traction in general - if you are towing or go anywhere near non-metalled road surfaces it's worth it
