Problem with LED tail light replacement

Featured Replies

Hi!

I own a Skoda Octavia RS Estate built in 2009/09, hence a 2010 model.

I've bought these tail light replacement LEDs :

http://www.hova.com/baklampor-led-svart-skoda-octavia-mk2-(1z)-kombi-2005-/

On other sites, e.g.

https://www.sw-tuning.de/en/LED-taillights-Skoda-Octavia-Combi-1Z-04-12-smoke::33619.html?MODsid=131a580e2c98810302551f6d2ce2617c

it is stated that some LED replacements are not suitable for RS, the onboard computer is different for the RS model apparently.

When I tried my newly bought LEDs I get a warning in the display indicating a faulty lamp, break and position LEDs seems to work but turn signal and reverse signal

does not work. When using the turn signal, the frequency of the flashing signal in the display is twice as high as normal and the sound ticks twice as often compared

to normal.

The installation is kind of fool proof, I removed the bulb in one of the position light (the upper one) and connected the now empty bulb holder to a small connector from the LED replacement, the other position light (the lower one) is untouched and placed in a hole in the LED replacement and then the big connector is attached to the LED replacement. The big connector can only be attached in one way so I think (hope) that the installation is done correctly.

Is this due to the RS having a different onboard computer compared to a non RS?

Is there any way of fixing this?

Are there any other RS compatible LED replacement kits out there for a face lifted RS Octavia Estate 2010?

This could be (like many of the bulbs) that it doesn't have a canbus interface / rectifier. For example, when I first bought my Mk2 Vrs I bought a Xenon headlamp kit just based on the bulb fitment, they were cheap but flagged up the warning light to tell me the headlamp bulbs were gone. I then spent some more money and bought a set that were designed to work with the Canbus system and they work exactly the same but don't create the fault.

I don't think canbus is specific to the VRS so can't see that they would be selling lights that aren't compatible with the system, but, it sounds exactly like the problem I had. And as you said, you can't really fit them wrong.

Take a look at the ones you bought online and see if you can find a set with and without CANBUS mentioned.

So it may be that you can buy exactly the same light with the module to allow them to work on the canbus system.

Do you have a VCDS autoscan scan showing the modules installed?

Do you know how the led clusters are wired and if they have load resistors anywhere?

They are horrendous looking things.

Bin them and return to problem free non chav originals.

Job done.........

The turn signals (indicators) flashing fast is the cars way of telling you a bulb has blown, a common issue when fitting non-CANBUS LED's. The car does not recognise a LED is fitted (as they draw a lower level of power) and assumes a bulb has blown, hence the fast flashing.

There are a number of aftermarket LED light clusters out there now, all of them look pretty bad. These ones are no exception, but each to their own.

The other big aftermarket supplier for these types of rear light clusters is Dectane who also claim they are unsuitable for vRS and Scout models, see here...

However there are several members who have fitted them successfully without issue.

The main issue might be between pre-FL (2006 - 2009) and the facelift (FL) (2009-2013). Something changed in 2009 so the latest Dectane rear lights designed for the FL gained additional resistors to prevent the blown-bulb warning. See here...

The best option (in my opinion) is to run the genuine LED rear light clusters from the Chinese version of the MkII Octavia, although these still require some work to make them operate properly on a European model. This is a great thread but I fear these are for the hatchback only, not the estate (combi)...
