I take it my guess of the left one (the freely accessible one) is wrong?

If you have vagcom then you could unplug the coil pack at one side of the engine and see which cylinder logs a missfire.

Our good friend Mr. Clarke tells me it is the one furthest from the battery - as we thought, Quinten.

Problem solved.... pointless thread now though.

Oddly enough that was exactly my reply to Phil's text..lol

Cylinder 1 is always the furthest from the flywheel on straight engines.

Ahhh ,,,, but ,,,, quite a few of these engines are "bent"! ;)
