Just curious if anyone is running one and if so what power/torque they are running?  Also ar you on stock fuel system, stock engine, stock DSG?

 

I have a Turbo Technics fitted just now and can't see much/anything online on 7GTi/vRS with anything more than an IS38.

Can I play devil's advocate and ask, why would you want to ? What is the goal ? I'm just thinking areas like handing, diff are more useful than more power.

 

With maps on the IS38 offering up to 400hp,

or 300hp even on stage 1 standard turbo, driven by 2 wheel drive.

 

Please educate :) Is it just for straight line giggles at something like Santa Pod ?

I think the revo car has a different turbo, not sure on any details but it was at the JKM rolling road day last year

If anyone is interested Rob @ TSR is a good contact according to Quaife about the LSD's and you either need the O2Q or O2M depending on chassis - FYI

 

If you are looking for extra power makes sense to find better ways of putting it down ;)

~300bhp/300lb/ft tends to be the road limit for FWD cars. Even with a capable LSD, the front wheels will struggle within 1st & 2nd gears. For people wanting a "safe 300 to 330bhp" the IS38 is a good option as it is an OEM part manufatcured to run at those levels alongside almost identical engine compenents. IS38's can push 360 to 400bhp, but this is stretching the envelope and will serioudly affect lifespan. Of cousre, the vast majority of owners keep their cars stock. A small percentage will Map their cars / fit a tuning box and some will add exhausts and free-flow filters. Very few will upgrade their turbo's to bigger OEM versions, and an absolutely tiny percectile of hard-core enthusiats will use 3rd-party or bespoke turbo's.

 

Rough Guestimate;-

90% stay stock

9% will try a remap or fit a Tuning box at some stage of the cars life

0.9% may add an exhaust, decat, free-flow filter (minor physical performance mods)

0.09% will upgrade to bugger OEM turbo (most after failure of original turbo outside of warranty)

The remainder will consider hardcore mods such bespoke turbos, injector, piston, rod upgrades etc.

 

Op sits within the 0.01% / one-in-ten-thousand class, and good on him. He is braver (and probably richer) than me. Tuning a car to it's limits takes a lot of expertise, money and effort. In many cases you can buy a new faster alternative car for far less money than a seriously tuned hot-hatch. My guess is that Op's modded VRS will cost similar to a stock AMG A45. The AMG will be faster in most cases, but the VRS will be a one-off-special with some kudos.

Depends on what folk want, some are happy stock, others are happy with a bit more but it is a bug, always wanting to push the boundaries of what a car can do and keep up with your friends, competition.  This conversion is more an overseas way of tuning a car especially in USA, Russia, South Korea and South Africa very popular over there for street / drag racing.  Personally I like the idea of something that looks pretty standard but has only necessary parts fitted under the hood to make it a bit of a sleeper, just in case... ;)

AMG A45 is 40K new (or min £26k used)

Octy £26K, or less used ( maybe half that)

 

Stage 1 remap 300hp = £600

Stage 2 remap, all the gubbins, maybe £5K or maybe more, but really £15K difference you think ? How would you spend that much ?

We are just talking about getting the same sort of power or more here - not just trying to make a car that is equivalent of the AMG ?

 

Also I wouldn't wager my own money one way or the other, whether the OP's car was faster than standard AMG A45, or it was faster. On paper it sounds 40bhp more than the A45 but not sure if thats just the 2013 car I saw on the ebay ad.

Some of the Golf R with IS38 mapped have been claiming 0-60 in 3.5 although I wouldn't make any assumption to the correctness of that.

 

Either way, the generalisation is not one that I agree with necessarily. Some can go OTT with modification but I think realistically I think it could potentially be far less expensive that you suggested.

I guess only the OP can answer the full bill :) But stage 1 for 300hp with no hardware seems very good VFM.....

When moving, the in gear times would surprise quite a few cars, A45 included but being FWD would have a few issues off the line :)

Although as a comparison, based on Racelogic vBox, the vRS when running an IS38 from 0-150mph would be quicker than a Stock RS3, which is 4wd with a pretty good launch control.  This mainly comes down to the aftermarket parts fitted helping with cooling and keep the boost/timing where the tuner has set them, where as a stock car would back off when temperatures rise due to limitation of stock components.

I understand Op has gone a bit further than stage-2 with gubbins, but claimed power of 404bhp is indeed a nudge above the A45's 380bhp. Once out of 2nd-gear performance should be close between the two, but remember that the A45 has 4WD traction, a much lower-ratio 7-speed DCT gearbox, and a chasis tailored specifically for it's power delivery. In most hands and upon most roads the A45 will be faster. It will also retain it's warranty and likely be far cheaper to insure.

 

I remember spending thousands tuning an Impreza STI IV. Bespoke remaps, full catless exhaust, up-rated internals, sorted suspension & brakes, and it still got roasted on-track by a stock Evo 6 which would have cost less.

 

400bhp is mightily impressive from a VRS/GTI and will surprise just about anyone who encounters it. My stock VRS struggles to put it's power down in dry conditions within 1st and 2nd gears, so I guess 400bhp may struggle in 3rd on anything other than fresh tarmac.  

Sorry I was looking at the cheapest used A45 on the ebay, which is still twice as expensive as my Octavia for a 2013 model with 60K+ miles on the clock or something....it claimed 360hp which may be less for that year.......so must have been tweaked up a bit over recent years so depends whether you are talking new or used I guess

 

Out of interest this should be interesting - mind to take a moment michaelaa on what this has done for your economy ?  As far as tuning box threads concern should be literally paying for itself .......or not :)

Economy still as good as before high 30's on a run, still drives like a vRS :)

The Merc/AMG A Class is megafugly though. And inside it's got a naff dash with an ipad ducktaped to it. Two good reasons not to throw cash in their direction.

Mines on stage 1 and it really struggles with grip, not just off the line but when exiting islands quickly in 2nd / 3rd, it skips easily :-(

For me I won't be going higher without 4WD, although I haven't driven that power with an e-diff or mechanical LSD / Torsen
