Very noisy air-con

Featured Replies

I had it re-gassed a couple of months back but the noise is back and louder than ever :(  I think it's had it basically.  Very noisy on Auto but silent on Econ.  I'm assuming it's the compressor thats the problem, anybody got a part number for the right compressor?  A 2007 Octy 2.0 TFSi vRS hatchback.  Had a look on Ebay and new prices are a bit steep, will be looking for a recon unit possibly in March / April 2017.  Don't see much point replacing immediately won't be using Auto mode much in the next few months anyway.

Econ mode disables the air con, and converts the system back into an olde-fashioned car heater, so I think you're right that the issue is the compressor or its clutch.

Its probably a clutch-less compressor on a 2007 model. If its making a noise I would change it sooner rather than later. If the compressor seizes up then it could fill the entire system with pieces of metal that will be a pain to flush out and could lead to it ruining any new compressor you fit at a later date.

Could you get a video of the noise? The extra strain to the belt could be causing the alternator pulley to make a noise if that is on its way out.

You can get the whole system changed for around £450 which is what I nearly did before deciding to sell my 07 VRS which had an identical problem. You've been lucky to get it to 2016 before it conked out. The diagnosis was that due to the noise and length of time I had the problem the specialist firm suspected that metal particles had contaminated the entire system.

If somebody told you they had replaced the whole system for £450 they were lying to you. Bear in mind the whole system includes, compressor, pipework, dryer, condenser and evaporator.

I tried to upload a recording of the problem but this site comes back with "You're not allowed to upload this type of file"   Also I'm getting a slight vibation through the clutch when manoevering (Sp?) with the system on 'Auto', does not happen with the system on 'Econ'.  I'm keeping it on Econ until I can get it fixed, just in case !
