Recharging battery

Featured Replies

I have a Fabia Estate auto. My Battery has gone flat (Left my parking lights on once too many)

My question is 'is there any reason why I cannot use a battery charger while the battery is still connected. My car is keyless an has stop start. Will it be safe just to connect up, or can I use one of those battery booster things they sell in Argos.

Thanks for any help

I've never heard of anybody blowing their car up due to leaving the car connected but your not supposed to do it unless you have an intelligent charger such as a Ctek which is apparently safe to use, probably because its microprocessor controlled and is a bit more involved than a standard charger.

For what it takes it take the battery connection off I would rather be safe than sorry.

Again, as above, if you dismiss the older simpler chargers, ie the ones with no smartness built in, you should get off with leaving the battery connected, but why not just buy a descent cheapish one and use it with the battery disconnected?

A few years ago, I had an engine start issue and quickly bought an RAC smartish charger from maybe Argos - due to their location and opening hours, then used it while the battery was still connected and got away with it.

For other reasons, I now also have a CTEK "really smart" charger and have given away all my very old dumb chargers to someone that likes to play with old tractors! (by dumb chargers I mean chargers with a single fixed charged rate and just a transformer, bridge and fuse)

Edit:- battery booster, if you mean a battery booster pack, ie a portable battery, then yes that should work but can be a bit expensive when compared with a charger, unless you plan to make a habit of needing this!
