Sorting a leaking screenwash tank...

Featured Replies

My screenwash tank has always had a bit of a leak in the year and a half I've had my fab, but whereas before it was a slow one and I thought it could be put down to the fact that the pipe to the rear washer had become disconnected, it's now getting slightly ridiculous. Last week I filled the tank around 2/3rds full, made one journey of 20 minutes out and 20 back, using just enough screenwash to clean my windscreen of a bit of dust, and then parked up for the night. Next day, there was a huge puddle under my car and the tank was empty.

Are there any 'standard' places where the tanks are known to leak from? It's in such an awkward place that I can't get a decent look at it. I think you have to remove the wheelarch lining to get to it - is that right?

If anyone's got any thoughts on how to sort this, I'd be grateful. Pipes to front and back jets must be connected as I get the spray whilst the water's still in the tank!

Cheers.

There's not much to them really. It might be leaking where the pump pushes into the rubber seal. You can pull the pump out and fit a new seal (part 443955465). Otherwise it might be leaking from the pump itself or one of the pipe connections. There is also a rubber bung to blank a hole used for a level sensor if your car doesn't have one.

You can remove a few lower screws in the wheelarch liner and bend it back enough to get to the tank but it can be easier to remove the liner.

when our was like that it wasn't the tank that was leaking but the valve on the pump outlet (the white cylinder on the 1st piccie aboe.  Took it off split it apart, cleaned it up and the re-assembled it with some windscreen sealant - worked fine then and no leaks

I too would suggest the pump.

had this saga on the Wife's Fabia a couple of years back. Thought the winter freeze had cracked the container (my fault for not checking screen wash levels). Ordered new container and fit it (major ball ache to do this - front bumper has to come off etc. Seized bots. broken plastic lugs etc etc). Put old pump back in and thought all was good. No - still leaked. From the pump. Bought cheap pump from ebay. Stopped leak but performance was rubbish. It lasted 6 months before packing in. Bought decent Febi pump from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006DHY3UC/ref=pe_1909131_65443131_tnp_email_TE_AMZLdp_1  . This has been working perfectly for the last 18 months.

As said - pump access through wheel arch liner. Easiest to remove completely then you can clean out all the crud behind it too. Doesn't take long. Easy access to pump.

Just don't do what I did and push the pump sealing grommet into the washer bottle when installing pump! Had to take whole bottle out again to retrieve grommet. I was not amused by this!

he he - I didn't manage to do that but did subsequently have a pump fail so bought a new one only to find that the direction of spin was reversed so when I wanted to clean the windscreen I sprayed the rear hatch.  Couldn't be bothered to get a new one so just extended and swapped the pipes over...
