Chech gearboxes (FAVORIT, FUN, FORMAN and FELICIA) repair.

Featured Replies

The old Chech gearboxes are simple and rugged.

But there are also some design mistakes.

One of those - no real limiter for the vertical gear selector shaft. Its movement down is limited by a plug with an internal hex 8mm seen from the bottom. Its movement up is limited only by friction between the steel shaft and the holes in the aluminum case,

The result: after a long time it becomes impossible to select the 1st and the 2nd.(the shaft crawls too high).

The solution is simple: inserting a ring over this shaft.

But the gearbox have to be opened.

Here everything is straitforward except the final closing of the case halves.

The lever used to push the reverse gear  have to be inserted in two slots: the one in the reverse gear and the second in the reverse selector shaft.

Does anybody know the right way to get this reverse lever engaged so the case can be closed?

Thank you.

Hi leny008 and welcome to the forum!

Your innovation (the ring over the shaft) sounds interesting. Can you take some clear photos of that part to see where it is installed and attach the drawings with dimensions?

As for your question, I've uploaded for you the relevant pages (and more) from Skoda Felicia Service Manual.

If you took clear, well lit photos of the steps for repairing the gearbox, I would like to see them.

Thank you Ricardo.

Hope the hurricane doesn't hit Dominica as it did Haiti.

By "vertical shaft" I meant #18 in dr. S34-0048.

The ring dimensions: 16x14x3.

I am looking for the "attach photo" button but didn't find yet.

The attachment button appears only in full reply mode (More reply options). The forum allows (sadly) only 2 MB of attachments in total. There are many alternatives though:

  • use Google Drive if you have a Google account
  • use Yandex Disk
  • create an account on imgur.com
  • send all photos to my email (see my signature) in a zip, rar or 7z archive

Create albums and upload photos on the chosen server. Finally you will have to insert a link to the album in your post. Those (very few) that insert photos in their posts use image hosting servers.

Sorry for what happened in Haiti island.

Back to my small problems:

To close the Skoda gearbox one have to insert the parts of the reverse lever into the slots in the reverse idle gear and the reverse shaft.

In the attached pictures the corresponding points are shown and the arrows colored correspondingly.

Do I have to use an endoscope to see what am I doing?

Is some wire or thread to pull the lever in the slots is the right way to solve it?

Thank you.

Did you get the PDF I've uploaded for you?

Look at page 16 (the Note after figure 2) then at page 8 and do it in reverse order.

I have uploaded an album of 20 photos to look at and maybe you'll figure it out.

Yes, this is the correct way to assemble if you do an overhaul.

I may have to open the big nut at the end of the main gear shaft if I have no success closing the gearbox as it is.

There is some trick to manuever the lever into its place and so save all the work of removing the back cover, opening and tightening the big nuts etc.

And to put this ring (16x14x3) over the shaft in page 16 fig. 1, there is no need to open the gearbox.

Thank you for the photos.

And by the way, if you can sell me some parts of the selector mechanism from your gearbox before the overhaul, which are not too worn, I would like to buy.

Thank you.

I can't see how anybody outside your country could send you parts at a reasonable price. Unless you can find second hand gearboxes in a local scrapyard, you are pretty much stuck.

Anyway, we are interested to know about any progress of your project. In case you have the time and the possibilities, can you write an illustrated guide for overhauling the gearbox for Felicia? That is a much needed guide.

The problem with second hand gearboxes is - the parts of the selector linkage are worn to unknown extent.

These wear out before the synch. cones. So usually only these have to be replaced, no need to dismantle the gears from the shaft.

I shall look to buy any parts of the selector mechanism. Think the shipping from the Chech republic won't be too expensive.

The Felicias are really cheap and probably nobody will invest time in overhauling the gearbox.

If there are difficulties to select the 1st and the 2nd, the remedy is not complicated if one reads the above posts.

All mentioned above isn't true about the Fabia. I saw the picture of the parts breakdown and it looks like it was designed by VW.

It's not the shipping price, it's they don't ship to your country.

I have to disagree. A new gearbox is not at all cheap.

I can pay some 100 bucks for a new selector part including shipping.

You didn't mention if you have figured out how to close the gearbox. Try to help this community too.
