New Yeti Connectivity

Featured Replies

Hi - getting to grips with my new Yeti (after 3 years of previous one!).  Basically the same vehicle just the outer skin different, and a different engine to the old 1.6 Greenline one.  The current 2.0 stalls quite easy if going too slow but otherwise all is good.

What I have been toying with is the "wonderful" technology of Smartlink and Apple Carplay.  Finally got it installed by the dealer who had to order it in especially.  Ok, got it working and the navigation with Apple maps is pretty good.  Still mostly use the SD card for the music.  Don't do much phoning or messages while on the move - still distracting though hands free.

So, what I can't do is link in any of the Skoda apps using Smartgate.  I've followed the destructions but there's no wifi signal to sign in to, so not got any further than that.

Any thoughts on how to make it work - I thought it came as standard.  Does Smartgate need installing or some hardware, despite having Smartlink sorted?  Seen all the Skoda stuff about Smartgate and got a bit excited about all that data, but now a bit deflated as can't connect.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Martin

Smartgate is a separate  option to Smartlink. Both are extra cost options, and on the software side, both are likely to be already present in the appropriate ICE unit, requiring activation either in the factory, or by a dealer subsequently.

As you'll have found, Smartlink operates over a USB socket and cable connection with an android phone (Android Auto) or iPhone (Apple Carplay). Additionally, some android phones support the third party Mirrorlink feature.

Smartgate differs in that it send car data to the phone over wi-fi. The wi-fi sender unit has to be installed as part of the Smartgate option.

If your iPhone sees no Skoda wi-fi network in the car, I'd assume you didn't specify it.

Thanks for that - yes, I've got Smartlink working fine.  It's just from all the stuff on Skoda site it seems Smartlink comes as standard, and my dealer certainly didn't mention it as being an option, so just a bit surprised that the apps don't see a wifi signal.

Ah well, I'll have to talk to the dealer next time I'm down there for a service.  Not overly bothered about the G meter app!  Generally drive smoothly!

A couple of the others look a bit interesting with all the data.

Cheers

Hi Martinadi, which dealer installed/activated your Smartlink?

I think to get WiFi connectivity you'd need one of the newest generation infotainment systems as being hyped for the Kodiak.  That needs a SIM card inserted into the car.

Smartlink and Smartgate are 2 very different things. Smartlink works by sending signals to the car on a USB connection and Smartgate sends signals to the phone by Wi-Fi.

Smartlink is a £150 option and Smartgate is a £100 option if ordered at the time of car being built to order.

I think Smartlink is a great option with all it provides but cannot see much use for Smartgate, most of the information it sends to the phone is shown on the dash.

Totally agree with Urrell, I opted for Smartlink but could not see much more information with Smartgate although there might be options to record and track the information.  For me it was just not worth the £100.  Smartlink I do like and I've joined the Google Maps beta testing program and I'm currently using a beta now.  I understand that road speed limits is due to be released something I miss that is available on the inbuilt Nav system.  Mind you I use an app that tells me where cameras are located so I get a voice reminder and an over speed nagging if I go a few mph over the limit.

If it's not breaching any confidentiality undertaking, any idea when Google are adding Waze support in Android Auto, or when the speed limits are being added to GM?

I tried a third party overlay for speeds but because it's not a curated app, I couldn't get it working with Google Maps in AA.

My dictionary doesn't work anymore

Not able to answer your questions at present as I've only just got into the beta program. I Googled the issue of road speeds and there was some indication that this may not be that long away. Wake is a very popular app so I'm sure it's likely to be on the radar. Google 'seem' to be happy enough to get compatibility for apps unless of course it's Amazon!

There is no great requirement to get onto the beta testing I also do this for Anquet mapping for walking, interesting excercise.

For speed cameras I use the PocketGPSworld app. The database is very good but there is an annual fee which can get waved if you report new cameras and they are confirmed. I run this app then this auto boots Android Auto, I get voice messages from both. It can get a bit tangled but the vast majority of the time works well. The camera database gets updated every week.

I've tried, but I'm currently failing, to load the cameras via the Skoda Portal adding POI's to load onto the Amundsen, still a work in progress.

As I've said before the AA app and Camera app both have good quality voices. As we are both sad we personalise these voices the Amundsen is Doris, as it sounds like every other digised voice we've had. However, the AA app is now Fiona and the Camera app is Posh Fiona. Really sad I know but maybe it's to do with our age?

Vantage Skoda Morecambe - my nearest Skoda dealer!  Previously David Ian.

At least when the new Heysham link road opens it'll be easier to get to.

Ok - thanks for the replies folks.

Wow - £100 for getting some info on some apps?  Don't think I'll bother.

But from the Skoda brochure info there is no mention of cost, except for Smartlink.  I was convinced Smartgate was just standard, and my dealer never mentioned it anyway.  And the manual for the Yeti explains how to log in and again, makes it sound entirely standard.

Can't log in cos the car isn't broadcasting a wifi signal.   :coffee:

Not entirely disappointed, as said: much of the info is in the display anyway.  Just some of the apps sounded marginally interesting and I thought it was just a case of logging in. Wasted quite a bit of time now, but I'll just give up I think.  Certainly not worth £100 but no mention of any cost in any brochures.

And the tech stuff seems to cause the dealers some issues - their guys are good with nuts and bolts, not so much with codes and computers!  :D

Brochures can only say, at best, what's available. Equally, the manual has to cover several models and options.

The model configurator is the only real source of detail as applicable to each specific model.

Aside from Android Auto/GM, the Skoda app I do have on my phone and find handy is this (for android - there's an iOS version):

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.inmite.prj.skoda.service

Looking ahead, a Kodiak style hotspot connection will become standard, I'm sure, and within it, a method for outputting to, and recording vehicle data on, a mobile device.

Thanks Ernie. I'm 66 going on 13. The other day we spent a fun 10 minutes giving rude voice commands to Google hoping the posh lass would respond.

Very diverting, till I realised they're all  effectively Google searches.

Oops  :giggle:

Just wanted to say thanks for the app. It's really useful, especially for new owners the option to quickly browse the electronic manual is great. Also the quick tips with images.

Regarding the AA/GM it's more like a love-hate relationship for me. I love the quick search, click and navigate w/o entering full addresses. On the other hand it did sent me into incoming traffic on a one way street last week. And living in a match box country like me makes it almost useless because of the roaming charges. Waiting for the end of roaming next year though.

Regarding voice commands what I know/use:

Play music -> starts Spotify on a random(?) track

Navigate to work/home

Call X

How's the traffic-->zoom's out to show traffic around

Search find [POI name/type] eg Search indian restaurant.

Michael, I'm pushing towards 72 and still happy to pick up a new challenge, I'm very much in the school that says "use it or loose it"

... "use it or loose it"

Mrs G keeps telling me that. No idea what she's on about.

I like the app for the manual, dealer info, VIN, parking etc etc

I hear you on roaming. I've just said this on another topic:

"My tariff only has a 2Gb monthly limit, including roaming. Many tariffs now have bigger limits and have anticipated the end of roaming so it just isn't the issue it once was.

Driving down to Italy in June, we used live Maps and AA all the way. Had I had to pay for it, it would have been about £35 from memory. That's a lot -  but a lot of journeys too, for the cost of a built in satnav or top of the range standalone unit. And no update issues further down the line.

It may well be different for those streaming Netflix etc where there maybe not a lot left for live Maps. But I don't do that, so 2Gb is plenty for me."

It may be different in Lux. Coincidentally, coming back up to Zeebrugge from Italy, we had an overnight in Luxembourg City. Stayed at the Parc Plaza on Avenue Marie Therese. Had a nice wander about, including down to the old town

Don't know if you watched the Google event yesterday, but voice command is going to be huge. They say theirs will be much more conversational too.
