Forgive a newbie question but having just taken out the retractable shelf in my Estate whilst fitting a dog guard and bootliner I was wondering what the silver bar that runs under the shelf is?

I've never seen this in other cars -is this a safety thing? It's removable so not sure.

It's for holding a few lightweight items....extra storage up to 3.5kgs if memory serves. A sort of boot width storage pocket.

You may also have a net that goes upwards to partition the rear from the seats.
