Tyre pressures please

Featured Replies

Hi can any one tell me what sort of tyre pressures for my 1998 Skoda Felicia 1.3 im running alloy wheels with 195 x 50 x 15, in PSI Please

I have googled and come up with the same size tyre for a VW Polo front 34 PSI rear 31 PSI - Skoda Fabia front 30 PSI rear 30 PSI.

Your thoughts please.

When it comes to tyre sizes not recommended by the car's manufacturer, things are tricky in theory. There are many variables that come into play, the load index being one of them. But luckily there is an empirical method to find the correct tyre pressure. Let's look at the image below.

As you can see, the idea is to get a wide, uniform impression of the tyre on a flat road. Here is what I would do. I'd go to a mall with an underground parking (it's dry inside and the floor is pretty flat and smooth). Park the car with the wheels straight. Wet the upper side of the tyre with a sponge. Roll the car forward to let an impression of the tyre on the floor. Compare it with the ideal one.

PS

Alternatively you could use lime solution instead of water to wet the tyre if you do the above test on dark asphalt.

It's dependant on tyre make and model, but personal experience suggests that excess edge wear can become visible after 1_000 miles or so with 10% under-inflation wrt the ideal for that specific make and model of tyre (even retaining standard size).

As for the relevance of the Polo data quoted to a Felly, how do the 2 cars compare in mass, weight distribution and front end geometry?
