Ebersp

Featured Replies

bryand was asking how my Eber is assembled on vRS. I went outside (-24) to take couple of pics.

I also took a picture of my miniclock, which I can adjust the heating period, starting time (3 presettable times) and continous heat when I'm in shop etc. and wanna keep inside warm.

Hope this answers bryands question.

sorry about crappy pics, my Nokia 6822 can't do better ;)

That's excellent, thanks for your efforts.

It's a big lump, isn't it? - I was wondering where they fitted it. Having one of these would prevent you having a FMIC, but then overheating isn't a problem, I guess...

Yes it is quite a big lump (widthxheightxdepth in millimeters is 220x86x160). No FMIC for me I guess, but there's always an option to buy custom made SMIC. Which has been made from better materials and has better flow than original. Naturally cutting innerfender is a must.

what on earth is it?

Eber warms engine coolant using diesel (on petrol cars, naturally petrol). And with having own little waterpump it circulates warm coolant all over engine, so you have on startup ready warm engine. It is also possible to use cars own heating system to warm up the cabin also. So -25 isn't as bad as you could imagine. 30 mins usage and no ice no frost and you can take your coat off when entering car.

The alternative, I guess, would have been to fit a FMIC and put the Eberspacher where the SMIC was.

I believe that could be done. Main reason for thinkin better SMIC is finnish law, if I change into FMIC I should have my car inspected for that new IC, it's not that usual every year inspection, but closer look of pollution etc. And it costs money (1500->€, not depending should your car past the test). OK, better SMIC should go to this inspection also, but it won't be so visible. :)

In Finland it has been made really pain in the *** to do any mods to better performance, at least EU type approval cars.

In those temperatures...Who would need one!!!!

It gets warm in summertimes, when all the polar bears and penquines are gone ;)

What is that? What's it do?

Pre-heater

Do all cars in Finland require these to be fitted??

No.. Its only for those that have enough money for that luxory :) Those preheaters cost about 1000e? not sure how much, but still too much for most peoples.

Most cars have electric heater that warms up the cooling water of the engine, these of course require electricpost near your parkingplace..

Its recommanded that you preheat your engine if it gets under 5 degrees celsius.

As you may now its not very good for the engine to start it cold if it`s like -20 degrees outside.. It could be sayd that one coldstart wears your engine as much as 500km of driving.

And many cars dont even start in -20 degrees if they haven`t been preheated.
