anyone recommend a decent phone holder?

Featured Replies

can anyone recommend a decent phone holder for using your phone as a GPS? the last couple i've had were crap and didn't grip the phone well (loose plastic to plastic pressure, with no bottom piece) and it always fell out.

My phone has slightly curved sides, which doesn't help.

any advice much appreciated

Try brodit.

They aren't the cheapest but in my experience are great quality and work well. Mostly as they make mounts designed for a single device :-)

+1 for brodit

FWIW I've got a brodit mount for my TomTom, but they do tend to be universal units, so imagine once you have the Brodit base mount installed you could change over from my TT holder to one for a mobile phone.  I have one that attaches via the column between the windscreen and the door window and find this much more satisfactory for the satnav than having it on the dashboard side of the steering wheel.  I like Satnavs where they obscure as little of the screen as possible, but are sufficiently accessible that you scarcely have to glance away from the road to know what they are showing - they are so much safer than ones which are mounted in such a way as you have to completely swing the eyes away from the road view to see them if you do need to check something.  FWIW anyone that sticks sticks satnavs/mobile phones to the centre of their windscreen ought to be metaphorically hung by their respective short and curlies and shot - it is SOOO dangerous to obscure that part of the windscreen IMO  I cringe everytime I get behind a driver, particularly on a dark night when they are noticeable who sticks them there.  Sorry folks - IT mounting in cars is a bit of a hobby horse of mine.

How about the one that you can get for your phone. Samsung do a fantastic holder for their S range.

I use a couple of neodymium magnet disks, about the same size as a 2p piece, stuck to the dashboard. The phone just sticks to it very firmly. I have a Nexus 5 that does not need any supplementary iron/steel as it is attracted to the magnet by default, alternatively a small piece of iron/steel can be fixed to the rear of the phone or, if the back is removable, inside. This is a very stealth approach as there is nothing to suggest that a phone would be attached when it is not there and the magnets can be disguised. There is no faffing about, just put the phone on the magnets and it stays. This was harder to explain than it was to do. If anyone is interested I can do some photos of this method in 2 different cars.
