Engine Oil - Which Grades For Top Up

Featured Replies

I'm switching from a 2009 diesel for which I used VW507.00 for top ups between variable interval services. Used quite a bit over the years, but within limits. I carried on using that oil even when I switched to annual services.

Now switched to a 2016 1.4TSI petrol. Will buy some oil in case I need to top up on my intended long journey.

The car is going to be serviced before I collect it and we agreed to go for a fixed annual service. Can I use either the VW502.00 ( prescribed for fixed services) OR the VW504.00 (prescribed for variable services) for top ups?

I suspect some oils will have both markings on them.

Must remember to dispose of my surplus diesel oil in an environmentally friendly way.

As an aside, why shouldn't diesel spec oil be used in a petrol engine car?

You should top up with the same as what is already in there. It is likely to be 5w30 longlife which meets 504/507 spec. My car has just been serviced and was on fixed intervals (had 3 services in 15K/3yr) but the dealer told me they use the same longlife oil regardless of fixed or variable servicing.

On the point of diesel spec oil, as long as it meets VW 504 - the petrol spec - it can be used.

Thanks Ahenners and BATVANVRS,

The oil I already own is 'Fully Synthetic' 5W/30  and meets VW504.00 and VW507.00. So will be OK for top ups if needed.

I'm sure at one point diesel oils had 'too much detergent' in them for use in petrol engines. Good to see that there is some simplification in Standards.

The 1.4TSI engine is to EU6 and one link above says VW504.00 is suitable for EU4.
