high pitched squeal from right wheel.. Brake pads?

Featured Replies

Hi

My wonderful 24 year old Favorit needs some attention I think

My front right wheel has a very high pitched noise. It tends to start once I have been driving 5-10 mins, I live in a city so brake a lot in that time so I presume the brakes have warmed up a bit by then. My guess is that the brake pad is getting low and I read they have a metal tab which will make a noise to indicate it's worn.

Questions :-)

- Is it a relatively easy thing to change the pads as I would like to attempt it myself?

- Do you have any tips for doing the change?

- Is it likely the noise could be something else? ( the only thing I can think is bearings but I know the sound they normally make when gone and this is not similar)

Thanks!

"Relatively easy" is a very relative thing :) What is easy for me could be difficult for you for various reasons (no right tools, no skills, no garage, etc.). I would say that changing the brake pads is definitely a DIY job. With one condition (!): no seized fasteners, pins or pistons.

- Do you have any tips for doing the change?

  1. Make sure the pins (blue arrow) slide freely, their rubber boot is intact. Use only silicone grease, no petroleum grease.
  2. Make sure the caliper piston (red arrow) is not seized or rusty.
  3. Apply copper grease on the back of the brake pads and also where pads touch the caliper housing.
  4. Do both front brakes.

The noise may come from seized pin(s), seized piston, uneven wear of brake pads or the wear metal tab touching the disc. A worn bearing makes a rumbling noise. Look also for any other signs of parts/debris touching the wheel or brake disc. Check if the front right wheel gets hotter.

Hi Ricardo

Last winter I was getting my winter tires put on and the guys there said the wheel was hot. I had a mechanic I know take a look and something was causing the pad to rub so I assume that has probably been the cause for the pad this side to be more worn. I'll take a look at the pad and see. i have to get my winter tires put on this weekend so whilst there I'll try and take a look when they take the wheel off.

As far as the details you provided, which are great, I feel confident enough to give it a go myself.

Thanks

One more thing. Since you are one of the very few :( Czech members of this forum, I invite you to study the possibility of sending original Czech parts for Favorit and Felicia in Europe. Sadly, Czech online shops ship only to neighbouring countries. I am sure many Favorit and Felicia owners need good quality parts.

PS

I visited your country and I loved it.

I'm not Czech I hail from the UK originally however you are right it is a wonderful country which is now my home.

I have extremely limited time due to a young family and work but I would not be against helping someone out. The post office is a nightmare here they are not very flexible with any unusual sized items so this may be why some sellers could be reluctant to send.

I should have known that, because it was a little odd for a Czech to ask questions on Briskoda when there are lots of dedicated Czech forums and lots of technical books and guides for Favorit.

That is odd for a country that left behind 23 years ago the bureaucracy and stupidity of communist ideology.

Oh well... at least my enquiry had a good part too. Your fellow citizens are now aware of your availability for information and who knows, maybe some will visit Czech R as tourists and also to load a trailer of parts with your help :)

Re. the brakes job, uneven or too worn brake pads on one side is the result of seized pins or piston.
