Hardcore's French Car Thread

Featured Replies

Along with doing work to my own car i often do work on the old man's Peugeot 106 and now my brother has a Saxo VTR that a lot of work will be getting done on by us both so i thought i'd post those here as well.

Dad has had this 106 now for almost 5 years. 130k roughly, quite a lot of dents but mechanically good and economic with it's durable but puny 1.5 diesel engine.

Done a lot to it over the years he's owned it
It's a Zest 2 so sunroof, power steering, central locking, electric windows and split rear seat were all bonus's

Oil change roughly every 5k
All glow plugs replaced
Coolant drained and replaced
Brake fluid replaced
New back wheel cylinders and brake shoes
New battery
Full new exhaust
New (& upgraded) gear linkage joints
Gear box oil replaced
Timing belt replaced
Alternator stripped, cleaned and rebuilt
New starter motor
Rust treated the underside
Alpine head unit
LED interior light, side lights and number plate lights
4300k HIDs

Sounds like a lot of stuff and it's an old car, but it costs peanuts to repair, easy to work on and drives better now than it did 5 years ago when he got it

Rust proofing the underside and spare wheel. Grinded most rust off with brass wheel on an angle grinder, then 2 coats of dinitrol followed by 2 coats of Ronseal No Rust

My brother has been learning to drive recently as well. He's managed to get a decent insurance policy in his own name on a Saxo VTR with all mods declared for not much more than i pay on my own car!

He bought this a few weeks ago for not a lot of money.
Saxo VTR
Lowered suspension
Window tints
Show cage
Sony head unit
Different door speakers
4-1 Piper manifold
Stainless back box
Induction kit
Tinted rear lights
LED sidelights

It's on 130k and is a bit rough here and there

Since he's had it, he's swapped the straight through centre section to a standard centre section to quieten it a bit and take away the exhaust rasp.
Replaced rocker cover gasket
Oil & oil filter change
Front brake pads, and discs cleaned and lips removed
Fitted LED interior lights and number plate bulbs
Battery secured

Although the silver one is fine for a learning car and short term, it's hard to justify pouring a lot of money and time into it long term.
Another Saxo VTR came up for sale reasonable cheap locally. It's completely standard, except from an air filter, it's a 2002 and on 68 miles. It's an MOT failure though

It's had a fair bit of work before we got it.
4 x new wheel bearings
2 x new bottom suspension arms and bottom ball joints
1 x new driveshaft
New rear pads

Mot failure points include wear in the rear axle bearings (silly torsion beam desig
Welding to the 2 rear sills.i've got the side skirts off and to be honest it does look a bit scary, but it's not at the point of no return yet.
Front brakes (pads look heavily worn)
Could do with front tyres
Faulty indicator stalk (spare supplied)
Ripped inner driveshaft boot on opposite side from one that was replaced (also supplied with sale)
Previous owner also supplied 2 x new track rod ends

So far only removed side skirts to inspect sills, swapped stereo & speakers from silver one to this, interior LEDs to this, smoked effect rear lights, air filter and catch tank from silver one to this and cleaned and treated some rust in the engine bay.

I can't see the photos but I had a VTR. Wicked little thing it was but drove me round the bend. Used to overheat constantly, horn stopped working, loads of stuff. Chopped it in for a yellow Seat Rosa haha.

It was great fun though, white, lowered, infinity speakers and Alpine head unit. Loved it!!

Photobucket is having issues just now it seems so pictures should appear when it's back up and running

Saxo / 106 platform is really easy to and cheap to fix but the build quality isn't quite the same as something from the VAG group!
Fun little things to drive though.

The 106 passed it's MOT first time the other day with no advisories so treated it to some new LEDs  and a good clean.
Not bad for 137k miles

I found some more pictures i'd taken a while back of the 106.
The ones at the very top were after i'd taken the rust off the underside and spare wheel using a brass wheel on an angle grinder, then 2 coats of Dinitrol.

These are the same parts, but after 2 coats of Ronseal No Rust
