Defrosting car

Featured Replies

............I'm with you on this one Mr Kipper, I'll ask Mrs G if she'll get up to defrost the car whilst I have a cuppa, need tea when I'm stating at 5 AM.

Divorce papers in the post.

I'm from Norway :D

Do you really know what winter, snow and ice is?

Its a little fun to read about your "problems" :-)

Alas, a small dusting of powdery snow is enough to paralyse the rail, road and air networks here.

Long gone are the days when we used to be known as "Great" Britain.

In fact, these days our ineptitude at just about everything is, frankly, embarrassing.

Get yourself a 5L bottle and fill it with water from the cold tap. Start the car, pour water over windows and go.

Not a great idea leaving your car running outside. If it's stolen, your insurance won't be interested. Not preaching, it's entirely your decision and risk but it can and does happen.

Since 1973, when I started owning cars - when there is frost on the screen I fill a large jug with lukewarm water and dribble it down the windows - don't throw it on

never had a cracked screen

remove snow first with soft brush

I have had a rubber scraper that must have had a bit of grit embedded - scratched screen - luckily the Insignia is being pxd tomorrow for a 2016 15 plate vRS hatch tomorrow

There is quite a difference between Norway & parts of the UK in winter.

The temperature tends to stay lower in winter in Norway and the air can be drier, but then Norway is diverse as is the UK.

There are very large variations in the UK which is an island nations and which has parts that are further North than the South of Norway.

Warm water and the likes where the Air or Ground Temp might be around freezing when clearing the windows but the temp will rise later is different from defrosting and the temp staying below 0*oC all day, or for days and weeks on end.

H20 going into the Heater / Air intake and freezing, down the rubbers on the side windows and freezing inside the door and becoming a lump of ice which grows as the days of pouring water on the windows and nothing draining out the bottom of the door as many Skoda owners know about.

How can you scratch a glass with a plastic "blade"?

Also, if there's just "freeze" and not solid ice, a scraper is a few seconds job.

A hairdryer is a good thing if there's real, solid ice AND you have a convenient plug nearby, unless you use one pluggable to the cigar lighter, which is quite dangerous for the battery's health. Plus, you have to get out the thing and then re-wind the cord and store it away. All things OK if thick ice makes it worthwile.

It is posible to scratch the glass if the cars not cleen as any dirt comes between the blade and the glass, over time this causes micro scratches. I use warm water and never cracked a screen yet.

What is the lowest Ambient Temperature you have poured water on the glass of a car, and how warm was the water?

Lots never have an issue or had broken glass.

Then there are those that have, a small chip in the glass, or even some of the windshields that are prone to break easily might be the reason.

Enough people have windscreens break just in weather / temp changes during the Day / Night in winter.

Me  -4C, handwarm

So really not the difference between oo & ahh.

Its not like an extremes of temperature is it.  Still cold enough for the H20 to freeze in the vents below the windscreen and doors if the temp stays low & no thaw during the day,

and if it will keep freezing day on day,  or there will gradually be a sheet of ice around the area you park the car as the week goes on and there are freezing temps.

But hardly even worth worrying about if warm water freezes harder than cool water or if that is an internet myth.
