Monte Carlo diesel buying guide?

big eck

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

I'm just about to buy my first skoda, a 1.6 diesel monte Carlo edition (all going well) and want to know what I should look out for when viewing it?? The car itself has full dealer history with cam belt and water pump done by skoda and has only 30k miles. Any known common faults with them??

Cheers Alex

More depends on the type of journey you do.

Are your journeys 15 miles or 25 minutes without too long sat at tick over? If not the EGR valve will develop a fault and need replacing at £600 to £1000 and the DPF will become blocked requiring a 20 minute blast on a motorway at 2000rpm to clear the warning light.

If you do short journeys get a petrol or a 2008 to 2010 1.9tdi (no DPF on these).

What year is it? Since the cam belt has been done I guess 2011 or early 2012.

As already posted the EGR is probably the most likely expensive fault at £1000+ at the dealer, although if full Skoda history at 30k miles you might get some support, or £700 at a good VAG specialist independent.

One weakness is the seals which fail on age as much as mileage. The unit was revised but I'm not sure exactly when.

If the EGR has been replaced by a VAG dealer it should be recorded.

Coming up eventually are the modifications after Dieselgate. The long term effects we be unkinown for a while. Of course you don't have to have the modification done but could be difficult to avoid if you continue using a dealer for servicing.

Would you be buying from a Skoda dealer, an independent or privately? What warranty will you get both length of time and items covered.
