When it's better to change for winter tyres?

Featured Replies

Hi! :hi:

I've got the controversial question to the audience of experienced drivers. What is your opinion concerning the tyre changing?
When is the most suitable moment to do this? When the first snow touches the ground or earlier?
I consider it must be done at the end of October when you can inspect your old tyres properly and discover if they need any replacement or can be left for one more season.
For example, it can be difficult to do by yourself sometimes, so you can opt for a shop with a fitting station, where the experts are at your disposal. Here you can find any services you want. It seems to be a very convenient option for busy people or for those, who don't feel confident enough to do it by themselves. When I bought tyres for my Skoda Octavia at http://www.tyres-guru.co.uk/ I was advised to check that they are inflated appropriately and whether their size matches the requirements.
Do you have your favorite online shops that you can recommend?

I would be grateful for any piece of advice.

In the UK winter tyres on when temperature is consistently below 7C.

I normally put mine on mid October but with it being so mild I'd left until a couple of weeks ago. As Philbes said around 7-8c is when you'll notice the difference with winters on. Mine are on a set of spare wheels so just a matter of swapping wheels over without the need to visit a tyre fitter.

Checking the inflation and condition of the tyres you should know how to do yourself as these are your only contact with the road.

Hi grateful for Any help on this subject, just had some part worn 5-6mm continental ts830 winter tyres fitted and the road noise is becoming unbearable. I had them fitted to my stock alloys 205/55/16 Octavia Mk2 elegance. Not sure what to do, checked for uneven wear, tyre damage before they went on, pressured at 32psi, Is there something specific I can do to reduce the noise? Thanks.

Part worn tyres are a bit of a lottery to be honest, how old are they? Who's had them before you? Have they been thoroughly safety inspected?

Winter tyres are generally a bit more noisy. When was the last time you had your 4 wheel alignment checked?

Lurch, those tyres are directional and the V pattern should point forwards otherwise you will get lots of noise and tyre wear.

If mounted correctly and I am assuming the same size as the previous tyres then get your wheel alignment sorted as Matt said. Winter tyres are normally softer compounds so run a bit quieter.

Hi Thanks for the reply, the direction of the tyres is correct, wheel alignment may be the answer. I'll make some enquiries there's a 4 wheel laser set up garage local time me, I'll update the results.

My rule of thumb is to change when you you stop mowing the lawn.  I don't know if that applies so well in London Alexa where lawns are often converted for parking, but you get the idea and it works for all latitudes. Reverse applies in Spring but you can get caught out if you wait for Easter.

Hi Lurch, try increasing tyre pressures 0.2 bar above what you normally run for summer.

So from 32psi to 32.2?

So from 32psi to 32.2?

No, 0.2 BAR, which is just under 3 PSI. Depending on load and what tyres you have fitted, you could be running up to 2.5 BAR in the summer, the accepted convention appears to be to increase that pressure on winters as your tyres will be running colder and will not gain as much pressure through running heat. This heating while running is the reason why tyre pressures should always be checked COLD.

Doh! my bad, didn't read reply properly, cheers I'll do that tonight. Had 4 wheel alignment done today as well, it needed doing.

Thank you for the answers. I completely agree about the temperature.

Yeah, I've got the idea, Jeeves, thank you.

I generally change mine with the clocks as the temperatures mostly match up. Sometimes they go off early if spring becomes excessively hot.
