Its a bit stiff

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I have been running my Vrs with eibach springs and standard dampers for about 6 months or so and the handling is amazing, but, the suspension does crash quite violently through potholes, expansion joints etc. I just went up the M6 with 2 passengers in and the extra weight seemed to make it even more noticeable.

So my question...does fitting uprated dampers that match the eibach springs (koni or eibach) make the ride a bit smoother?

I am no expert on suspension but I think the stiff springs with soft dampers might be the cause of the crashiness.

Cheers

Andy

Did you cut down the bump stops?. I think that JBS figured this out when they fitted Eibach springs.

Ride on mine with matched springs and dampers wasn't crashy at all and was actually more comfortable than the standard setup. :D

Chris

I've got Konis set on max rebound and that gives good bounce in a WRC stylee.

The 'progressive rate' of the Eibachs stops any body roll through the twisties.

John.

its a trade off cars come from factory as a compromise youve made it handle better but its harsher.

as long as it doesnt feel like driving up a kerb when u cross an expansion joint

springs are the cheapest method of lowering a car or stiffening suspension up.

fitting a full kit or maybe an adjustable on so you can choose how harsh or comfy you want it to be.

there are FK coilovers on ebay for 375quid which is very good.

not Konis or Eibach but then Brands dont bother us cos we have Skodas. ;o)

Aye I must admit it can be a bit stiff, fortunately roads around here are in pretty good nick!

I was under the impression that without uprated dampers (like mine and yours) the ride would be pretty harsh - so I presume with the uprated dampers is would be a little less harsh?

Great - just the thread I didn't want to see pre mine being fitted this Saturday. :thumbdwn:

The roads around here are pants, and I quite like the smooth ride as standard. I feel the improved handling will justify it though! Fingers crossed...

Cheers for the advice so far

I think i'm gonna put some money aside each week until i can afford some dampers...hopefully in summer sometime!

My friend is a rally co-driver and he brought a vid of in-car footage the other night. It was in a 98 Prodrive Impreza WRC on an Irish rally and the thing that struck me was how it cornered but also how smooth it was over every surface, even jumps etc. brilliant.

Its not too stiff...

Dont worry the benefits out weigh the stiffness lol

Feels so much more planted and (dare I use this word) 'sporty'

Sorry Tom,

to cheer you up though....there is still NO WAY i would put the standard springs back on.

Oh, and the roads by me are really really bad :thumbdwn:

Tom as I said it does make it more "crashy" but the feed back and chuck-abilty will be worth it, I honestly think it's the best mod on the car, even better than the re-map!

 Standard dampers were "OK" with eibachs. Ran Mark1 like this for a fair while - in fact right up until I crashed it. :D

Never went back after that. Bought eibach dampers alone and fitted the recovered springs to them, and enjoyed some seriously nice 100% eibach suspension, until I opted for my current coilovers.

Apart from the lowering benefits, are coilovers really better than eibach springs with a good damper e.g. eibach, koni, bilstein etc..

Just wondering if i ever want to upgrade dampers...

Well, mine are even stiffer around bends. :) Eibachs were OK around corners, better than oem. But coilovers... they just don't budge at all. Can be fun on rough surfaces or potholey bends, but thats part of the game. :D
