256mm Rear Discs

Featured Replies

Do the 256 vented rear discs upgrade suffer from the same problem as standard rear discs i.e. the brake pads not reaching the outside edge of the disc and so the edge of the disc corrodes and you end up with the rusty ring around the outside edge.

Don't suppose anyone has investigated different rear brake pads to see if there are any that have a slightly wider pad material and so contact the whole of the disc surface?

Pretty much every disc has this issue, at least partly because the corrosion is naturally thicker than a clean disc, so it "creeps up" from the edge.

Every car I've ever had with rear discs has this problem, it's because the rear brakes do so little work compared to the front, conversely vans with rear discs do not suffer from this because they are usually loaded and the rears work as hard as the fronts.

Will still happen. Also happens because the rears don't really get hot enough so adding bigger rear brakes won't make a difference.

Thanks for the info chaps.

Will have to carry on sanding the rusty edges off every year or 2.

Find a friend with a lathe and trim the offending bit plus a mm off the diameter of the discs?

Not doing you any good, after all; just extra mass.

I painted mine with a high temp zink spray paint to keep them nice and silver.

No friend with a lathe unfortunately but I was already thinking about the painting idea, should slow down the rusting process a bit.

Cheers
