2.0tdi 140 blue smoke had new turbo

Recommended Posts

hi everyone,

ive bought a 2006 octy L+K 2.0tdi

when i went to pick it up it was chucking smoke out and was told itd clear as its been stood for a while, didnt believe him but took it anyway knowing it had a months warranty.

anyway, took it back and it had a new turbo, picked it up on monday done about 150 miles in it so far.

now, it chuffs out blue smoke at low revs or if moving along in traffic, when i pull away itll chuff out a load of blue smoke and then stop. it is using a fair amount of oil too.

could it be the new turbo thats faulty or is it something else?

i am taking the car back on saturday morning and was hoping i could offer some ideas as to what it could be as they had the car a week last time and dont want to be stuck without it again.

thanks in advance.

gaj

any one any ideas?

taking the car back tomorrow morning after an argument with him today, had to put in just over a litre after doing 120 miles.

he thinks its just oil in the system from the old turbo being fubar.

told me to drop it off and hell drive it around for a week. that wont be happening, either he fixes it or ill have my money back and find another one.

Oil in system? Wouldn't normally contribute to further consumption after replacement and they should of cleaned out charge / exhaust pipes with a failed turbo anyway. Blue smoke sounds like rings? Edit: [And 1Litre in 120 miles!!!! that's massive] It's not sounding good with the attitude of the selling dealer...

yeah id have thought they wouldve cleaned the system out. think hes just making his excuses to try and run the warranty out, im more than willing to have my money back and look for something else to be honest. and its looking like that how its going to be going by his attitude, ive had 2 heated discussions with him now and both have resulted in him putting the phone down on me.

yep 120 miles and i ended up putting a litre in to get it back to full.

doesnt seem to smoke when its on boost though only at low revs which is strange.

It's a problem, but it doesn't need to be personal. He likely didn't know the problems when he purchased or traded it but he should be taking it all on board now and doing what he can.  No need to be heated or hanging up!! No informed customer purchasing is going to accept 120miles per litre even with strong arm tactics.  He would be better doing what he can to resolve and both parties keeping their cool!

Usage pattern sounds a bit strange but perhaps when on boost the usage is diluted enough to not notice the smoke but the consumption continues.....

that sounds likely as it is using a hell of a lot of oil, ive got to top it up just to take it back in the morning.

i can accept that he probably didnt/doesnt know whats going on with it, what i cant deal with is his bad attitude as thats whats likely to make me ask for a refund and take my hard earned elsewhere.

just having a read through the forum and realised that i hadnt updated this, turns out theyd fitted a second hand turbo and didnt replace the oil feed pipe. new turbo number 2 was fitted along with a new oil pipe and an extended warranty and all has been well since.

just though id update incase someone comes across it looking for a solution.

cheers for all the help.

aaaah well, didnt last long. have been having problems with the car going into limp mode under load, when the turbo was replaced they said theyd fitted a recon unit, so was convinced the overboost code was caused by something else. turns out they lied and fitted a second hand turbo. was using the car at the weekend and out of nowhere the siren noise started and within about 20 miles it was screaming at me. so this time im fitting a recon unit myself, atleast then ill know the jobs done properly. now just need it to stop raining long enough to get it off.

Ok, so the turbo is off. It is indeed a second hand unit. It's even still got the tipex written on it. Now to decide whether I want it rebuilt for 200 quid or a recon unit for 400 quid...

Well, one thing for sure, you just can't trust what a used car dealer will do to "repair" a car.   As you've done the work yourself now, the cost of giving you piece of mind doesn't seem too bad given the reasonable cost of a rebuilt or recon unit.

youve got that right mate, i was tempted to take it back just to make a fuss but i cant be bothered with the grief. i was going to take it to a garage to be done, but thought whats the point, at least ill know its done right and everything that needs changing has been changed. it needs a few other bits doing as well, needs a timing belt and its having a full set of new glow plugs. the thing will be like brand new this week haha

Yes, not worth the stress arguing I think. They would probably "fix it" with another second hand unit. And the process of getting to that outcome would not be worth the grey hair and raised blood pressure.

recon turbo fitted today and all filters changed filled up with some fresh oil and shes running like a dream, power delivery is very smooth compared to before. pulls very well now, its like a different car.
