Rear brake disc preferences...

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have a 53 plate 1.9TDi estate, which got through the MOT last week but with an advisory on (amongst other things) rear brakes. Think I have Pagid on the front....

What brake discs and pads do folks recommend?

(I'm currently not working so don't have much to spend, but refuse to put the cheapest on!)

TIA!

As the rear brakes do very little in terms of stopping power I wouldn't worry too much about them. I just bought a rear disc and pad kit from Mintex I think, from EBay, it was about £30 for discs and pads for the rears. Meanwhile I spent £100+ for just the front pads, that's where the majority of the braking occurs.

^^ This.

You can put any old nonsense on the back, they hardly do anything unless you're often heavily laden, I use Pagid pads as a minimum standard and tickle the old discs with a grinder to knock off any ridges, don't think I've bothered to replace the rear discs yet on any car, they don't wear out so much as gradually rust away.

Thanks, I regularly tow a caravan 200-300 miles so it does do quite a bit of heavy braking in that sense. They do last though, it's on 153k and I've put the last 100k on it. I think I've only replaced back brakes once and that was drums on a previous car. I'd like to get something that hopefully won't need replaced again for a long time and will take the towing and high mileage... Are there any definitely worth avoiding?

If you were to stick with either Mintex or Pagid as a lowest 'limit', I don't think you would have any problems. Chances are whatever you replace on the rear now will outlive the car!
