potencial broken MAF

Featured Replies

hi all

i know this has been covered before but was just after some clarifcation

symptoms started about 2 months ago... i lost about 4-5 psi of boost gauge used to go to 20 now goes to 15 occasionaly it would go into limp mode and only boost to 5 psi... a simple turn off a on of the engine would have it back to as normal as it gets... now its doing this limp mode no boose thingy more frequently.... its going into jabba on the 4th as this all happened as my service indicator came on... if it is a dodgy MAF is it safe to run the car ??

Thanks

Joel

Could be a MAF failure or a split vacuum hose (I've had the later, assumed it was the former)

Personally I would have said it ISN'T safe to run with dodgy MAF.....you probably would get incorrect fule to air ratio and eventually something explosive may happen.

I think Jon ran with a dodgy MAF...due to incorrect diagnosis....and got a rod through the block.

Get it sorted ASAP and save yourself a potentially hefty bill.

right ive just got the bonnet open... checked the maf housing ans its clean... which i supose rules out a blockage but is there anyway of testing the Maf or is it a case of there being a vag com error logged..

seems limp mode more when very cold ie in the mornings... or at night if it has not run all day

Joel

When the car has been running in limp mode, stop somewhere quiet, leave the engine running, and open the bonnet. It was only when I did this that I heard a hissing noise from a split hose that gave similar symptoms to yours.

It is possible to clean the MAF, though it hasnt been covered her emuch, it has been on www.seatcupra.net I believe soaking it is Isopropanol or "electrical cleaner" is the way to do it.

Don't think this is the MAF, Easy way to check is with VAG-COM and have a look at the measuring blocks for the MAF. With MAF failure comes a warning light for the ASR and you loose traction control (in most cases). Never heard of MAF failure putting the car into limp mode, normally gives a safe map. More than likely a boost leak with the usuall fault code, you know check DV sort of thing.

Mine went into limp mode twice had no boost and this was on a cold start both times was drinking lots of fuel to 19mpg round town and 29mpg motorway jabba put it on vag com and sure enough changed the maf (

Des, thanks for the pointer on the ASR light - mine has been on this week and I assumed it was related to the split vacuum hose - I think I'll change the MAF too.

interesting i have no ASR light on... but share chris's symptoms... im atempting to clean it tonight with some carb cleaner... also the car is still due for a service..

Joel

Dont use carb cleaner !!!!!

Get some alcohol based electrical cleaner from Halfords to do it. Stand the MAF in a pot and fill with the cleaning fluid, then leave to dry fully before refitting to the car.
