Cambelt change

Featured Replies

Evening I have a 2011 vrs estate CEGA engine. It's approaching 5 years old with 50,000 on the clock. I am led to believe that the belt is due at 120,000 miles but is there an age limit too? Does anyone have the answer rung my local skoda dealer and wasn't left with great confidence sadly.

On cars registered before September 2010 the time interval here in the UK is 4 years.

For cars registered after this date it is 5 years.

Cool so it's due this year thank you for your help.

Slightly hijacking the thread, but how many of us have asked for the old cambelt back after a replacement job I wonder?

I had mine done for the first time after 50k. miles and when I got it back it looked pretty much brand new. Even turning it inside out and looking closely at the areas between the teeth there's no cracking to be seen,-let alone any fraying. I'm sorry now that I didn't ask for the pulleys as well,-(purely for curiosity's sake).

The water pump's different,-apparently the are exchange items and can be returned for about £20. So i'd expect a garage to hang onto those!

I personally think the time limit is Skoda erring on the side of caution probably due to the fact rubber does perish over time. I'm certain the cambelts would go for well over 100k miles but it's not really something you want to mess about with. Then factor in different climates the cars will be driven in.

FYI I got my cambelt, tensioners, water pump and coolant done at Skoda on price match for £399 last month.

I think most dealers will price match an emailed quote from a local independent so shop around.

I had mine done too.

actually found the fixed price from the dealer was the best I could get.

Although they don't change the Aux belt at the same time which is a tad strange considering it runs the Air con and alternator.

but still very happy that a dealer was cheapest

When my vrs was 4 years old with 40k on it i had the dealer replace the cambelt kit, water pump & aux belt & i asked for all the old bits, they boxed up the old belts, tensioners & pulleys but could not give me the water pump as it went back as a exchange unit but they showed me it & there was signs of coolant staining on it but no play in the bearings, there was a bit of noise on one of the idler pulley bearings, the cambelt showed no visble signs of wear, the aux belt did have some cracks in it.

Ah yes good point, I had to pay an extra £17 for the aux belt but of course no charge for fitting it as the old one was off anyway.

I've just been informed by the main dealer doing the major service on my 2012 Octavia VRS 2.0 diesel with 35,000 miles is due for cambelt, waterpump and DSG service. Is this correct?

I have no trust in the dealer as last year they informed that the front discs are warped, badly corroded and pitted which they weren't. Just been told the same again and still aren't. Unfortunately I took out a service package with them but this is the last of the services but at the same time don't want to miss any maintenance required.

Im sure its 5 years for the timing belt on your car but depending when your car was built it may be due soon or later next year,im sure the dsg box requires a oil change every 4 years.

Cheers Mikey, I'm sure it was an August 2012 build so would be due next year. DSG gearbox oil change I was planning on doing myself during the summer when it will be nearer 40,000 miles

I may have got confused with the dsg oil change it may be every 40000 miles not every 4 years..
