Noises

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have a 2004 1.9tdi estate model, with approx 46k miles. I have noticed that particularly when under light to heavy load at about 1500rpm in gears 1 to 4, there is a 'chuff chuff' noise which seems to be at wheel speed. If I then slowly increase the revs, or change down a gear, the noise disappears.

I have wondered if it maight be a gearbox problem, but noises from a gearbox are usually squeals or grumbles.

Has anyone experienced anything similar; any suggestions anybody?

I have an annoying steering wobble on my 1.9TDi, but no 'chuff chuff' noise.

Only one i get at that sort of revs is the turbo just being on the cut in limit for boost, so you can hear that spinning up and down.

Vacuum Hose prehaps, otherwise not any really useful ideas.

It could be the turbo 'overboosting' due to sticking vnt vanes in the turbo, mine started to do this shortly before the boost went completely a month ago!!!!

Dealer told me i needed new turbo but mine has fixed its self ?? It starts when the turbo starts to get chocked up with deposits - as it happens mine had 46,000 on the clock when it started !!!

Do you do mainly short / town driving ???? May i suggest a good rev up to the redline when appropriate and engine is fully up to temp, i was amazed at how much #rap comes out. I keep doing mine now once a week and its fine, after a motorway run the other day it runs sweet.

these are links to the problems i was having and symptoms.

Mmmm. I have listened carefully to the noise in an attempt to pipoint its source, but with no luck. It does sound as if it is something rubbing though, rather than a gasping induction/turbo noise. Thing is, if it is something rubbing, why does it go when I change down a gear to force the revs up?

Anyway, will give it a blast tomorrow as going home for the weekend.
