Weird metallic noise on idle

Featured Replies

My car (not the actual one the video) is making this sound on idle:

When the car heats up it almost goes away or is less noisy. Does anybody know what might be causing this? The car is brand new (2016 octavia 3, 2.0 tdi 150 hp).

Thanks !

Sounds like normal injector tick to me. Let your dealer hear the car when cold and see what they say. £20 says, "They all do that."

Have them start a forecourt car with same engine and compare to your engine. You have 3 years warranty so don't worry.

That's funny :), yeah that's what they said. And we started a brand new one at the dealer and it was making the same noise. But i talked to other people that say their car doesn't do it.

It's really frustrating to buy a new car and when you sit next to it, it sounds like an old one with a worn out belt or something.

Remember it's a diesel and it's common rail. I just traded in a 2014 2.0TDI Octavia VRS for a 1.4TSI 7 Speed DSG and can barely hear the engine. The VRS with bonnet open and engine cover off, sounded like a bag of hammers in a tumble drier.

The injector tick and other diesel like noises will get less as the engine beds in, but it will never sound like a petrol.

To be honest, besides this metallic tick, the engine is really smooth (even the start/stop feels amazingly smooth). It's comparable to a petrol one if not for that annoying tick.

Yeh I found the VRS diesel engine was much more refined that the 1.9PD units that was in my Fabia VRS. Once the engine was warm it certainly felt more like a petrol than diesels of old. Only reason I changed cars was I needed an auto gearbox so that a left wrist injury can heal faster. I'm a keen musician and need that wrist for guitar playing!

Enjoy your new car, I'm loving mine, and so is my wrist  :sun:
