Suspension advice wanted

Featured Replies

OK, the imminent ARB GB deadline means I'll have to ask opinions rather than trying things out at the Cat & Fiddle meet. I think the Fabia vRS suspension can be improved but

  1. I don't want it any lower
  2. I don't want it any harsher and
  3. I don't want to spend more than I have to

What I do want is:

  • Tauter steering so I know where it's pointing even when it's hustled and
  • Flatter cornering - it is much less roly-poly than my old TDI was, but either I'm getting used to it or it's rolling more with age.

So would the addition of the SEAT front upper strut brace and the Jabba rear ARB give me what I want or is there an easier/cheaper/more certain way?

I don't drive flat out everywhere, but I do drive on many less-than-smooth roads. Your advice/opinions are welcome.

I will be watching this as I have exacterly the same predicament !

ARBs don't make it any lower, they do stiffen it slightly but their main purpose is to reduce body roll.

The strut brace will improve the steering fell and accuracy

If you have standard suspension then the Eibach springs WILL make a difference to steering feel and agility. The drop is only about 25mm, which is borderline noticeable.

My main gripe with the factory handling was a lurchiness from the rear when powering through corners and front end dive when hitting the brakes. The initial dive is now much reduced and more in line with the braking effort. The rear end seems better too, though it's still not completely settled.

IMO if you uprate the front ARB AND fit a rear ARB, you might achieve what you're looking for. Just fitting the rear bar may give a better balance to the car mid-corner but I don't think it'll help with steering feel and initial bite.

My newly fitted and now well tested front strut brace has tightend the steering, but you have to react quicker to get the best out of it.

It's made the car handle better but at the expense of having to concentrate a bit more when driven quickly (Which is exactly what I wanted!)

Personally, I'd do the Eibachs with Koni dampers set at max rebound. That serves me well (in a WRC style of way) driving 22 miles a day at 'Relativistic' speeds on Peak District 'B' roads. I don't think standard dampers could handle it. But that little lot's

Maybe a Jabba rear ARB, eibach 22mm front ARB comapred to the vRS 20mm.
