Signs of Re Mapping

Featured Replies

I've read quite a few opinions about the fact that with some re maps (like AmD one click) that it is virtually undetectable. Right. But surely, when you take your car in for servicing, the mechanics will see -

1) A big vent cut into the o/s wheel arch liner

2) Holes drilled into the front fog light surround

3) Obligitory strut brace fitted

4) Cupra PD 160 conversion to breathe

5) Bigger brakes

Etc, etc.....

The point i'm trying to make is with these mods in place, don't things really point in the direction of 'this car IS mapped' ;) Any excuses I should know off ? :D

Or there could be a thought that my friends have made these mods, so should I. ;)

I personnally would think that car is remapped if it needs larger brakes etc.

Mines been re mapped and I bought it from a main dealer with full warranty! He said he had it on the computer and apart from the miltek exhaust everythin else was standard ! Just have to hope nowt breaks !!

You lucky f.....ella ;):D

Yup ! I went to order a newbie, but he had this one and he said it was faster than standard, but really had no idea about it so I got an absolute bargain. After speaking to the previous owner he had spent a small fortune on it, with all the axtras and mods I reckon to have saved over 4 grand just for buying a 12 month old really rather quick fabia ! well chuffed.

Rub it in some more.... (jealous really) :D

I ran larger brakes a for a long time before remapping.

They can think what they like. As long as I spend 4 mins reloading the stock map before it goes in, they won't find a trace. I think Willbones got his father-in-law (or somebody) who works in the trade to check via vagcom, and he found nowt.

So, what do they do then, these remaps eh? Is it something like a roadmap or a streetmap?

John.

If they want to find it they will, but most dealers will never check the settings to find the tell tail signs on VAG-COM.

It should be a pretty easy thing to find if they want to find it - if they are able to read the map and compare the fuelling/boost against standard it would show even if nothing else did.

In my case the dealer refuses to fit anything that would void warranty, or even rear mudflaps (printed HellFire's guide off for my enjoyment a bit later on ;))

Once all the mods etc in my sig are on the car it's pretty non-standard, the only things you'll see from the outside though are the bigger brakes, FMIC and the Blueflame exhaust. Sure it's a little lower too but that wouldn't necessarily trigger anything.

When they open the bonnet though the FMIC and hybrid may just give the game away :D I'm not too worried about it as the bits I am replacing should give the car a very good chance of surviving for a good few years yet :)

I would say that if a mechanic / tech did a test drive as part of the service, they would not even need to put it on the 'pooter to discover it.

After all, how many standard furbie vrs's does your average tech drive? they should have a fair feel for what is normal ;)

Say there was a fault with the engine perhaps and they saw additional mods. If you folllow.

Mechanic re-delivered my car after a service and commented on how "Brisk" it was , the parts/servicing guy called me to ask what I had done later that day to which I pleaded innocence.

Just to get slightly back on thread guys, seriously, if in your re mapped car, there was an engine fault, you took it into the Dealers for a diagnosis, if they asked had the car been tuned in any way, what would you say ?

I'd 'One-Click' it back to normal first, then say all my mods are purely cosmetic and deny all knowledge. Since Willbones was specifically looking for it (in vain) its extremely unlikely that any dealer would try to do a deeper diagnosis. What do you honestly think they'll do? Send your car away to a top- secret testing facility in the former Soviet Union, where the equipment used would be based on reverse-engineered, Extra-Terrestrial technology.

........especially if it just meant replacing a dodgy MAF!

John.

The OneClick can be quickly returned to standard settings. A PD160 intake can be removed and replaced with the standard one in a matter of minutes. A cotton gauze air filter could be swapped over in minutes too. Even a strut brace can be removed hastily if need be. You could reverse ALL of these under bonnet in under an hour. Even a set of big alloys can be swapped back for originals in about half and hour or so. If your big brakes have green painted calipers and you didn't have a brake fault then they would not glance twice at them.

Don't panic, and don't get all paranoid, all a mechanic (sorry 'technician') will see is a clean, well cared for car unlike Mr and Mrs Average's car who will probably drop it off full of crisp packets and coke tins and half a field under the wheel arches.

There, feel any better now......?!!!

"I don't know nothin' about no re-map!"

John.

Or, just find yourself a dealer who finds likes modding as much as you do, enjoys thrashing your car for an hour at service time, and Roberts your mothers brother!
