New noise in cabin

Featured Replies

Hello all

So im still hearing strange noises out of this car, I've never owned a car like it in 30 years of driving.

Anyone know what a cyclic metallic scrapping type noise might be which i hear most loud in the cabin when the engine is running.

Very noticeable when idling and revving in neutral which changes the speed and sound of the noise.

If its going to do it will happen after say a 9 mile drive like it did this morning on the work journey. Its seems to be intermittent.

Don't really hear it out side of the car which is odd, i didn't stick my head under the bonnet today to investigate. I just turned it off...

The A/C wasn't on so can rule that out.

Thanks

Here's a quiet example, on a bad day its pretty loud in the cabin. Recorded from the engine bay, i couldn't really place it to an area on the engine.

Its the sort of cyclic pump noise under all the normal sewing machine noises. Only seems to do it after driving for a few miles, like the 9 i done this morning.

Not worked out how to embed video into the post yet...

"The A/C wasn't on so can rule that out."   --   well maybe you should turn it on to see if it makes any difference, remember that chiller compressor is directly driven by belt and it is always turning regardless if the AC is "on" or not.

Edit:- now that I've listened to that recording, are you sure that it is "cyclic" and not just "beating" caused by some secondary noise(s) coming into phase with the main engine noise package then moving away from it due to being of a different frequency?

Hi

Yeah, played about with the aircon on and off, no difference.

You might be right in what you say about the beating thing, so far I've only really noticed this noise when sitting in the cabin.

It was really loud last Thursday, its like a scraping noise. I've heard while going along as well but road noise / engine all get mixed in. It sounds like a pump working but noisily when idling.

I drove past the dealers that day then turned back to try and get them to hear it.

I parked up, turned the engine off then 10 mins later started it up with the dealer guy and it didn't do it...

By the time i got home about a mile up the road it was happening again.

Its very intermittent, i don't know what triggers it off as im doing pretty much the same journey each day.

Will be travelling up north soon so it will get a good run for about 3.5 hrs so see how it likes that.

I really like the car, its the cold start knocking noise when under load and this weird scrapping thing going on has kinda tarnished the experience.

Does the 1.2 TSI engine sound a bit knocky anyway? At the moment if i leave it idling for 5 mins from cold starting the knocking noise is much less and sounds more 'normal'.

That's what I've been doing to get around it so far.

I've got the recorder with me now so if it happens really loud again I'll try and get a better recording of it.

Best maybe tell about the car.

How many miles has it done, when was it built, have you had it from new,

what servicing has been done, do you know what oil is in it.?

Hi, bit of a delayed reply.

Covered quite a few more miles since last message.

Its a late 2013 1.2TSI 105PS petrol Elegance.

Full main dealer service history, miles are at around 13800K now, had 11K on it when i picked it up back in late October last year.

Really tidy car, looks like new. Had oil change done in December.

As for the noises, knocking noise still happens from cold. Closest thing I've heard like it is rod knock, but maybe its something else with any luck.

Worse when cold, quietens down after a while but always in the back ground. Maybe they all sound like that

Work around for me is to let it warm up for over 5 mins, idling. Knocking can actually pretty much go away then.

If i drive it without warming it up for so long knocking never really goes away for journey, bit strange i guess.

Other pump type noise varies, its like a swooshing noise cycling say at 1 sec intervals. Sometimes its like a scraping noise and quiet loud in the cabin.

Doesn't always do it, not sure what triggers it off.

I drove about 500 miles up to the Midlands and back from Southampton way over xmas, car was great. Only heard the knocking noise once, that is one knock when putting engine under load reversing one day. Was heard outside the car.

Maybe i should just turn the stereo up louder?

Hi Gonzini, don't want to worry you but it does sound like your camshaft is running with insufficient oil. If it doesn't do it all the time it indicates you may have a foreign body partially blocking the oilway, or just some oil crud that has reduced the oil way size passing through the system. Your car is very low miles for a 2013 and it's often the case that engines that do low miles often have done 'cold' miles due to short trips, never really warming up properly to keep the oil in good condition. This results in water build up in the oil and other unburned hydrocarbon deposits. Not good for the engine and it causes 'white mayonnaise' to form in the oil as it emulsifies with the water.  It's great at blocking oilways. To avoid that owners should change the oil and filter at 6 monthly intervals but few do. I've just had a friends Fiesta with this very problem. He does very few miles and the engine runs only warm not hot. The crud that built up in his oil blocked the turbo charger oilway causing the turbo to explode. Amazingly, the engine was unharmed, but the turbo, well!! In fact, when I stripped the engine to do the usual checks, the sump and all oilways were crudded up and needed a complete clean and blow through. That was a car that was just 3 years old with 12,000 miles on the clock. Owners should not forget that if you do low miles ie: 3-4k per year and these are only very short trips and warm or cold miles, then this is regarded as extreme operating conditions, as per the owners manual and the engine service regime should be adjusted accordingly. I'd get you car to the garage for a proper assessment. I hope I'm wrong...and good luck. Please post back with more info as it becomes available. If we can help, we will.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Didn't think of that one, i guess its very possible.

When i looked at the servicing history over the first 2 years it had done very low millage.

First year was about 980 miles, 2nd year not much more then in the 3rd year someone had done around 9K after the service in mid Dec 2015 then i brought the car end of August 2016 with 11K on it. Its just coming up to 14K now. I got the oil changed / serviced in mid Dec 2016 and while they had it i said to check out knocking noise when engine is under load when cold.

They couldn't get it to play up on the day of the service, i left it with them over night hoping for a frosty morning when the started it first thing but it was a bit milder so temps were up. They still didn't hear it, or if its normal for this engine didn't flag it up. They were very helpful and all that but no explanation to the knocking I've been hearing other than saying it might be the flywheel. I don't think its that...

No knocking when idling from cold, when it does it its like a hard knock knock knock knock knock as i pull away.

Leaving it to warm up it reduces significantly.

I didn't noticed it when i first got the car but temperatures were up being end of the summer, only when it cold, like under 5/6 degrees C it was very noticeable.

Its always had a bit of a tappy / knocky sound about it but i figured it was just the way they sounded, nothing extreme though i guess.

I also heard about the fuel line can knock on the chassis around the drivers side wheel arch but not heard an example of that and as far as i can see it looks clear of any metalwork looking from above.

Strangely enough in the blizzard on the way home yesterday when the temperature dropped the knocking returned whilst moving slowly in traffic.

I've not heard it get louder again when its warmed up. I'm doing 18 miles a day on the work run, its pretty hot by the time i get there after 25 mins with some fairly quick roads on the way.
I'm at a bit of loss at the moment as to getting a answer to what causes it. Nobody has come back and said its normal or some engines do it.

I did hear a VW Polo yesterday that sounded like it was making a similar noise, it was dark so didn't see what size engine it was. Didn't sound like a diesel....

Also i only hear it from inside the car, though someone else did hear it knock once who was outside the car when i was reversing up the drive.

Its like im going to have to wait until its becomes very obvious (if it does...) just so the main dealer actually hears it. I've still got a warranty on it until August this year but i guess anything major wont be covered. It was one of those Skoda approved S/H jobs.

Cheers

Would of added this video to the above post but can't edit now.

So i found this clip on youtube, its not my car. What causes the higher pitched noise / whine / vibration you can hear nearer the end of the clip? I've heard this noise on occasion and its annoying....

I wonder if i have the rattling fuel line thing or maybe the air induction pipe rattle. Can find any videos of what those issues sound like yet.
