Ultimate Road Clutch ?

Featured Replies

Interested to hear people’s opinions on what is the ultimate road going flywheel/clutch setup.

To narrow it down a bit let’s assume a max of 400lbs torque and 250-260bhp, I think this would rule out a DMF and so SMF options.

The two that always get good reviews are Helix and Sachs SRE, I notice Darkside also sell their own setup that uses a Darkside flywheel mated to a Sachs SRE clutch.

I've only ever seen pictures of the Helix clutch cover (which looks lovely for a clutch!), are the Helix clutch plates paddle or solid design?

If someone has had the opportunity to drive cars with these clutches fitted I would be very interested to hear what they think, if you have owned or driven a Helix and a Sachs SRE that would be great info:

Clutch judder?

Biting point sharp or ok?

Clutch rattle noise comparison?

Longevity? did it survive high mileage?

I am on my 3rd performance clutch and should I have issues again I want to figure out what is the best no expense spared (£1000) option for drivability/reliability/longevity should I need it.

Thanks

I have a sachs 4 paddle clutch with the DMF. It's done about 6 track days plus over 20k since it's been fitted and when my gearbox was out they said it still looked pretty new.

It does make a bit of noise, grumbles when you push the clutch in and can chirp on downshifts.

Bite isnt too bad and you can creep along just off the clutch in traffic. Pedal is quite heavy though.

Thanks for the reply, do you know if the clutch is a Sachs SRE ?

Yes I beleive it is, it's the kit awesomegti and Darkside sell. Once I get my car working, If your near Crawley at all your more than welcome to come and give it a try.

Oh an as its a non sprung clutch you do get some gearbox chatter/noise

Thanks for the info stevobeavo.

Hopefully a Helix user will read this soon and give some feedback :-)

I have the sre 4 paddle clutch aswell with solid flywheel noisy on tick over but copes really well with the torque but is like a switch the clutch is either down or up there isn't really a bite

Thanks Dan-Vrs, yes paddle clutches do seem a bit fierce for the road, I have a 6 paddle in mine and get a bit of judder now and again.

I thought I might have got more responses from people with Helix as they are suppose to be bullet proof, the PDF document on Helix site is not working so I cannot see what torque they are suppose to handle, looks like they do an organic plate and paddle option similar to the Sachs SRE.

Helix user here.

Fairly new to it as it came with car off a previous briskodian.

Mirroring much of what stevobeavo has said.

Helix is a very heavy clutch. Lot of ppl have complained when driving it.

Suffers clutch creep and not sure about the max torque figures but will be testing that out when i get it mapped again next month.

Never had a uprated clutch before so its all new to me but absolutely loved it when I took it on track.

Helix organic fast road clutch.

A word of warning when running a SMF, although many run one without problems they will eventually lead to ruining of your gearbox the 02m box isn't designed to run with one. To help make sure you run a clutch disc that is sprung.
