Ferry to Norway

Featured Replies

I tried to get this into the Motoring news but it would not go.

There is a website http://www.startauktonorwayferry.co.uk/ trying to organise a new car/freight ferry to Norway for those interested.

I think the same company tried to start a ferry on the Harwich - Esbjerg route a few years back but it sank like the Titanic!

Google Regina Line; they don't even have a ship lol

There's a petition to get DFDS to reopen the Harwich - Esbjerg route. I'd like to see it reopened as it's a nice quiet drive from there down to Hamburg.

Nice idea, such a shame to see a lot of ferry companies go to the wall.

I miss my local ferry, Norfolk Line used to sail from Great Yarmouth to Scheveningen

Tough economic times for freight carriers and cheaper for the general public to fly

With the international price of fuel so low, if they can't make it work now they never will surely.........trouble is that helps airlines also.

Ferries have had to switch to low sulphur fuel so have had steep rises in fuel prices.

There's a Facebook group dedicated to the cause. https://www.facebook.com/groups/RHEGFerry/

We were on the Dana Sirena on the last week of the ferry crossing before they closed it down.  Now we have nowhere to go for holidays...

Yeah, but imagine if fuel was back at $90-100/barrel also.

Someone wants to start a commuter ferry across Port Phillip Bay .......best of luck with that too as it's too exposed and too wide to be affordable and reliable

Done the Harwich Esbjerg run a few times on the Dana Sirena. Quiet trip usually. I remember when it had trouble in Harwich; we sailed on it a short time after

Yep, we thought it was quite fitting given that we were on the boat the first week she sailed as well. Also did the route on the Dana Anglia back in 2002, our first trip to Denmark.

This photo was taken in 2010 when we went for a Christmas shopping trip, and was the harbour just as we entered Esbjerg.

It is not just about fuel costs, but running the service at full capacity and how much they can charge

I sailed a few times on the Stena HSS Discovery and it was like a ghost ship

Promoters probably assume relatively full loadings in order to promote the service because the reality is usually quite different.

You have to be a hard headed realist when assessing viability over the 12 months or defined period of operation.

If it's a success, then you have competition to contend with also.

I reckon a summer only service, maybe 1 or 2 sailings a week would be full for Norway.

Maybe not this year, but next year when going south after we'd made even more enemies will be unpalatable.

I know I'd quite happily load a van up with food and tootle off to norway over the crowds in spain/france.

I think the one a few years ago lost out, as the co they were to lease the ferry off, sold the ferry at the 11th hour... might be rumours...

Also though, today opec and the non opec all cut production, so brent was going up at close of play. Highest since.. anyway it's going up.

I lived and worked in Norway from 1981 to 2000. In those 20 yrs I used the Newcastle/Stavanger/Bergen route once a year on average.

I saw the ferry owners and boats change quite a few times, but 4 things were constant.

The boats were always old - but clean. In summer so full, often difficult to book if not quick. In any month of the year the freight section was full. There would be a few Norwegians using the boat to shop in Newcastle. [even had a Norwegian Consulate in Newc.]

I get the impression the big money is now in cruise ships.

The way things are going I may buy a small boat, winch the Yeti on board and away. :D
