Intelligent main beam

Featured Replies

Hi all. I rarely need to drive at night so have never tried this feature. I think I know what it is supposed to do, but is it reliable? I'm suspicious of these automatic features. K

I've only ever had it properly kick in a handful of times on dark country roads, but it dipped the beam as soon as there was a hint of something in the distance/coming round corner etc. I never felt the need to override it.

Mine works really well, use it every time I'm night driving.

It's rubbish!

Sorry - did I say that out loud?

We've only had the car close to 2 months, but every time I've tried the auto Main/Dip system, it lets me down by being too slow to react in either direction.

So it will be the old fashioned way for us. In fact, we keep the main lamp switch set to ON these days, so that takes the worry away.

(ps - have answered my own previous question about text formatting as I see it is present here on the PC - while not on other devices)

Mine reacts very quickly and I haven't had any flashes to indicate it's annoyed anyone. Sometimes I'd like it to kick in at lower speeds (travelling on single lane through Wooded area), but other than that, I think it's a good system.

The speed at which it activates can be adjusted with vcds. I have set mine to 20km/h.

Are you talking about hba or auto lights?

the auto main beam seems to be affected by the "light early / medium / late" setting in the menus. Mine didn't want to come on this evening on the way home, which I initially put down to snow reflection, then switched the menu to early and it works really nicely.

It's extremely fast to swtich on or off and I can't really fault it. It detects rear lights nicely, doesn't turn on on lit roads - which is legally correct - and detects traffic coming towards me really effectively. Yeah, OK, occasionally, I'd turn the lights off later but I'm pleasantly surprised by it.

Also affected by iced/fogged up windows

Does the se sports have Intelligent main beam?

You need Xenons (which it has) but you also need the lane assist camera for this which it doesn't have, so no. If you had both you could spec it as an option from factory (mine was) or enable with VCDS for free.

............or £300 option from the Factory. I can't understand why people opt for these option

Cornering fogs £150 from the factory.

Yes, £300 is a bit much for HBA, but I guess some people won't know that it can be enabled for free afterwards - there's also the issue of finding someone with VCDS if you don't already have it and don't frequent this forum.

I'd rather the original owner spent the £300 on something that can't be enabled for "free", like Sunset Glass or Folding mirrors, but can't be too picky I guess when they ticked the important stuff already.
