The difference between a minor and major fixed price service

My 170 diesel Yeti is on 10k service intervals and is soon due its 3rd/30k service which I think will be a minor service.

I'm trying to understand the difference, other than costing me an extra £120, a major service gives. The last service it had was a major but I'm not sure that air and oil filter were changed. Looking at the fixed price servicing details their replacement seems a little ambiguous with the below † notes.

So my question is:- exactly when does Skoda deem these parts need to be replaced?

To be honest, it's a bit of a minefield because it depends on if you are having the service done for miles racked up or time since last service, or both.

Obviously a car going in on third service at 3 years with total of 15000 miles is going to need different answer to a third service at 15 months and 50,000 miles

If it is time, then certain years things like brake fluid and belts may be replaced because they degrade

If it is mileage, then filters, spark plugs etc after X miles

Sometimes need to look at invoice to see what was done last time to know what might be due this time

A cam belt won't be included in any fixed price service schedule, as I'm pretty sure they fall neatly outside the period of coverage.

Cambelt is 6 years - mine is being done along with the MoT this month.  It is about £325 to do the belt IIRC.  I'm having the water pump and 'stat done at the same time.

Good question - I got a call from the dealer because it is 6 years old.  There will no doubt be a distance measure too, but I don't know it.

My 140 TDI was 120,000kms IIRC

Just to reflect the pedancy, nowhere did I link the service and MoT.  The car is going for an MoT and whilst it is there it is having some appropriate time-based work done.  Hence "along with the MoT" rather than "as part of the MoT".

On my old Yeti it was done at 5 years and I was told that there was no mileage involved. Mine was nearly 100k at that time.

It seems like the cam belt change periodicity is a bit like the Haldex fluid - how long is a bit of string?

Seems to depend on which dealer, or even who at the dealership, you speak to as to what answer you get.

Just not satisfactory in my book, these things should be clear and unambiguous.

Extracted from my 2010 pre-F/L Yeti 1.8TSi Service Book:-

 

Oil Filter                                                               - Change annually or per service indicator

Air Filter                                                               - Change every 56000 miles or 6 years

Spark Plugs                                                         - Change every 56000 miles or 6 years

Haldex Coupling Oil                                              - Change every 37000 miles

Pollen filter                                                           - Change every 37000 or 2 years

Brake Fluid                                                         - Change every 2 years. 

Alarm Siren Battery                                             - Change every 6 years. 

 

 

This was for a car on variable service interval. I ignored the recommendation of "per service indicator" for the oil change as it was indicating 15500 miles, but changed the oil at 10000 instead. Didn't stop it suffering excessive oil consumption later though.

 

I've not yet extracted equivalent info for my 2016 1.4TSi - which i must get on and do!

You get that kind of Service Regime / Guidelines with New Models. Yet the same Engine / Drive Train already in a VW, Audi or SEAT might be different.

 

First change is Brake Fluid to 3 Years then each 2 years.

The Air Filter change is a long interval there and Location Location Location Matters.

A Air Filter in a City commuting behind busses can be well sooted up withing 2 years. Polllen Fiter as well in the country side or City.

Spark plugs might be well gubbed before 56,000 miles / 6 years.

 

The issue with Service Schedules / Guidelines is Dealers want Minor / Major Servicing with a Major maybe £120 more and no extra parts replaced.

 

Cam Belts / Water Pumps become something to suit Fleet Buyers / Leasing, and forget the person buying a 3 year old used car that has 

had Fleet Servicing.
