VRS first gear whine ?

Featured Replies

Is it normal to have a little bit of whine from the gearbox in first gear ?

I have a 16 plate Octy Vrs petrol and if I accelerate hard in first I get some whining ?

My mk2 octavia vrs always used to whine in first gear if i was in slow moving traffic,in normal driving i didnt notice it.

I wouldn't say it's normal, but 1st gear is so short, I'm amazed you can use it for anything other than getting the car moving. Whining in one gear isn't normally cause for concern, unless it's really bad. It's usually just the selector rubbing on the syncro hub ring. Possibly even machining tolerances causing very slight meshing pressure between 1st gear and the main shaft gear. Modern oils are super thin for economy, but they don't mask noises very well.

You can try this. If it whines under acceleration but not on over-run, it's just load whine. If it always whines, probably the selector fork or syncro hub channel slightly worn.

The only gear I would expect a new car to whine in is reverse.

Or your dog is not comfortable with the G-force being imposed on it :)
